1 Creating and destroying land
Changing the way Earth’s surface looks Creating and destroying land

2 3 forces work together to change the way the Earth looks over long periods of time
Weathering- breaks down earth Erosion-moves earth Deposition-builds up new land

3 Weathering

4 Weathering is the process of breaking rock material down into smaller pieces

5 There are 2 types of weathering
Mechanical Physically changes the rock Simply breaking the rock into smaller pieces caused by: Freezing and thawing Gravity Plant roots Abrasion (Being beaten up by other rocks in the water or wind)

6 caused by: Acid precipitation Weak acids found in plants Air pollution
Chemical Chemically changes the rock making it easier to break Makes the rock soft and holey caused by: Acid precipitation Weak acids found in plants Air pollution

7 Both types of weathering can happen at the same time on the same rock

8 How fast weathering happens depends on:
Kind of rock Hardness of rock (harder rocks weather slower) Climate and temperature (chemical is slower in cooler temps) Size and shape of the rock (larger rocks weather slower) Elevation This is called differential weathering
