1 Seeing your world with Monochromatic Eyes
What does Monochromatic mean? Mono means one and chroma means color So monochromatic means (Copy this) something that is just one color and all the values of it.

2 Examples of monochromatic
This Color Wheel shows hues (colors), hues plus black (shades) and hues plus white (tints) Each slice shows a monochromatic variation of it’s color.

3 Examples of monochromatic
normal colorblind Color blindness; There are different types of color blindness, just as there are different types of other sight problems. Some people cannot see things that are close up, while other people cannot see things in the distance. Same thing with colorblindness, some people see only shades of brown, while others see everything as different shades of green.

4 Examples of monochromatic
Just values of green Just purples Some scenes are naturally monochromatic looking Only gray-browns Only oranges

5 Every color translates into a value when you take away the color
Every color translates into a value when you take away the color. Copy this: Value is the lightness or darkness of a color.

6 In Black and White Photography, the image is reduced to values of black:
100% Black; deepest shadows Dark Grays Medium Grays Light Grays Lighter Grays 100% White; brightest highlights

7 highlights Copy this: Highlights are the brightest areas of a photo, usually reserved for reflections of light. All photos must have black and at least a little pure white to have a complete value scale.

8 highlights 1)What % of black are the deepest shadows?
2)Where are the highlights? 3)Which highlight is 100% white, where is it?

9 Highlights and shadows give us Contrast
B C Copy this: Contrast is the difference between 2 things. In a photo, contrast is made by the values. The highest contrast is between black and white. Which picture has high contrast? Which picture has lower contrast?

10 A B C Which strip has the most contrast? Why?
Which strip has the lowest contrast? Why? Why might your pinhole photo have less contrast?

11 The first TVs were monochromatic
Did you know? Philo Taylor Farnsworth ( ), was a 15-year old Mormon high school student in Rigby, Idaho in 1922 when he invented an electronic television system and explained it to his chemistry teacher.

12 Old monochromatic film TV Shows

13 Color TV didn’t come around in the late 1960’s, but it was expensive
Color TV didn’t come around in the late 1960’s, but it was expensive. Not everyone had a color TV!

14 All colors have a value

15 All colors have a value

16 Watch the color fade

17 And all that’s left is value

18 Now we will notice other things Because the color doesn’t distract us

19 All colors have a value In black and white photography, you will learn to observe a full color scene, learn to see the value in it, and judge whether or not the value scale will represent well in a black and white photo. So you ask yourself, “should I take this shot? Could I make it better?”

20 …what could improve the image?
Lighting-change the light, add light, wait for the light Background-change it or move Viewpoint- move

21 …what could improve the image?
Copy this: You can improve the contrast in a photo before you take the picture by: Lighting-change the light, add light, wait for the light Background-change it or move Viewpoint- move yourself or the subject
