3 What is philosophy? THE WORD “PHILOSOPHY” COMES FROM THE Greek; “philo” means “love” and “sophy” means wisdom. When you put it together, the word “philosophy” means “love of wisdom” Philosophy can be defined as “critical and creative thinking about fundamental questions”

4 One way to break down the massive scope of philosophy to look at 6 major fields or topics of study and their corresponding “big questions”

5 Branch (or field) of philosophy
Big Question Metaphysics (1) What is a person? Metaphysics (2) What is a meaningful life? Aesthetics (the study of art and beauty) How do you know what is beautiful in visual art, music and literature? Ethics What are good and evil? Social and Political Philosophy What is a just society? Epistemology and Logic (the study of knowledge) What can be known?

6 Our class will break down into 3 units’ each of those units will be broken down into 3 topics (or sub-questions) What is a person? (Metaphysics) What is human nature? What is a personal identity? If it thinks, is it a person?

7 What are good and evil? (Ethics)
Where do good and evil come from? Why be good? What is good?

8 What is a just society? (Social and political philosophy)
What is justice? What are rights? What is a good political society?

9 What potential questions do you think we could ask and discuss within those units and subunits?
What potential questions interest you about these units and sub-units?
