2 Danger Check for danger. For example, electricity, traffic and the speed of oncoming traffic and fuel leaks. Managing these hazards: Use bystanders to divert traffic Assess the risks of the problems

3 Response Ask questions: COWS C-can you hear me? O-open your eyes
W-what’s your name? S-squeeze my hand If the person is conscious reassure them and continue assessing the injuries and first aid.

4 Send for help Call 000 or 112 Be clear and calm on the phone so that assistance can be quick and efficient.

5 Airways Open the mouth and ‘scoop the goop’ with two fingers. (pistol grip) Ensure the airways are clear, if the person begins to vomit put them in the recovery position (on their side)

6 Breathing Check breathing.
LOOK- Get down to chest level and observe if there is a rise and fall of the chest. FEEL- Feel for air coming from the nose and mouth. LISTEN- Listen carefully for the sound of breathing.

7 CPR If the person is not breathing commence CPR.
Locate the middle of the chest and commence with thirty compressions. Pinch the nose and give two breaths. Continue this process until the ambulance arrives or if the person starts breathing. If this is the case, turn the victim on their side and monitor.

8 Defibrillation If there is no response from the victim and the ambulance is yet to arrive commence with defibrillation. This device can be used by anyone however they must follow the step-by-step instructions very carefully. Many of these machines provide voice instructions.
