The War Of Little Hope!! Key events, battles, and leaders of the American Revolution!

2 Why Did America Have No Hope?
Britain Advantages! Britain had the most powerful Army and Navy in the world (America had neither of these organized).  Britain claimed over 8 million citizens, with the ability to recruit 2 million soldiers. (America had only 2 million citizens). 10x recruiting ability. British financial resources were 1000x's that of the colonies. Colonies relied on foreign goods for much of their daily needs, and especially war material(Industrial Revolution). Britain set up naval blockade's not allowing the colonies to receive any of theses. Better trained leaders American Advantages! Colonies were more familiar with the land. Were defending their homes (Greater sense of purpose.) Time!!!

5 British Leaders! General Thomas Cage: First British Commander, after the defeat of Boston was replaced. General William Howe: Replaced Thomas Cage, as leader of British Army. Was replaced after the defeat of Saratoga. General Henry Clinton: Replaced Howe, stayed commander until the end of the war. General John Burgoyne: Defeated and captured at Saratoga. General Banaster Taleton: (also known as Bloody Ban, or the Butcher).  General Charles Cornwallis: Controlled most of the southern army.

6 American Leaders! General Horatio Gates:(2nd in Command) Was better trained and had greater experience than George Washington. Known for the battle of Saratoga, and Camden. General Charles Lee: (3rd in Command) Also was better qualified than Washington, was captured by the British.  Battle of Mammoth General Alexander Hamilton: From poverty to wealth, was not born in America (British Indian Islands).  Joined the military and became one of the most trusted men of Washington. Was in his early twenties when becoming Lieut. Col. General Lafayette: Rich French Noblemen, came to America to help the colonies gain their independence.  Washington considered him the son he never had. Other Key War figures:(Captain Daniel Morgan, Gen. Benedict Arnold, Israel Putnam, Ethan Allen, Gen. Morris.)

7 What Made George Washington Great!!!
Courage in battles. Worried much about public opinion. His refusal of money or power. His ability to unite people. His self recognition of his limited knowledge.

8 America Gains Momentum!
Lexington and Concord. (first shots in the American Revolution) Battle of Bunker Hill or Breads Hill (Gen. Putnam, "don't fire until you see the whites in their eyes.”) Siege of Boston The Importance of Ticonderoga. The grueling expedition of Benedict Arnold, Ethan Allen, and the Green Mountain boys.  Not one American solider was killed at the Siege of Boston. Gave America a false sense of confidence.

9 The Pivotal Year 1776! (Jan) Thomas Paine publishes a book called Common Sense. He exhorting Americans to rise in opposition to the British government and establish a new government based on Enlightenment ideals. Historians have cited the publication of this pamphlet as the event that finally sparked the Revolutionary War.

11 America’s Crucial Moment 1776
Washington's humiliating defeat on Long-Island. (Aug 12) Washington's miraculous escape. Fort Washington  Fort Lee White Plains  Gen. Gates and Gen. Lee both conspire to remove Washington.  The death and devastation of the winter. Washington knew time was running out.. He needed to do something fast.

12 Battle of Trenton and Princeton!
Battle of Trenton occurred on Christmas day 1776! (Crossing the Delaware) Was against the Hessian (German Mercenaries) Bitter cold, stormy weather, blood stained the snow. Only American casualties were soldiers who froze to death. The entire Hessian army surrendered. Battle of Princeton. Escape from Cornwall's army, and attacked at Princeton. Both battles gave Americans the  motivational boast they sorely needed.  This helped solidify Washington as the right  commander for the colonial army.

13 Battle of Saratoga! Battle broke out on Oct. 7, 1777, in New York.
Victory was won by Generals Benedict Arnold, and Ethan Allen. (General Gates received all the credit.) Captured over 5000 British Troops. Was the major factor in showing to France we could win the war, because of this, and Benjamin Franklin, France decided to enter the war

15 The Loyalty and Creativity of Nathanael Greene!
Was born and raised in Rhode Island, parents were devote Quakers. When war broke out he organized his own militia, meet up with Washington. Progressed throughout the ranks quickly, was put in charge of Boston after retaking the city. After Gen. Gates cowardice retreat at Camden, he became second in command, was in charge of the entire southern army. Used guerrilla warfare, major victory at the battle of King Mountain. His war like tactics frustrated the British armies. Francis Marion: Known as the Swamp Fox. Trapped Cornwallis and Yorktown.

17 The Battle of Yorktown General Greene traps General Cornwallis at Yorktown. French ships blockade the port so British ships could not rescue. General Washington with his troops secretly meet up with General Greene. Shortly after Cornwallis surrenders, The British loses their entire southern army(8,000). This was the final blow to the British armies in winning the War.

18 The Treaty of Paris Ends the War.
Signed Sept. 3, 1783 John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and John Jay represented America. Gave the colonies control of all land east of the Mississippi. Ended the American Revolution.
