1 Design Thinking Elizabeth Matchefts

2 Why design thinking? Desire to learn more about project design schemes
Bad choices in design causes frustration for everyone involved

3 Context In 2013, 60 Minutes and TV news reports have reported that the IDEO “have developed an innovative new approach to project design.”

4 “Design thinking is a human-centered approach to innovation that draws from the designer’s toolkit to integrate the needs of people, the possibilities of technology, and the requirements for business success.” -Tim Brown, president and CEO of IDEO

5 Thesis For the best advances in software design and development, a blend of … A strong traditional view of error free and fault tolerance and 2. Design thinking view that understands a user’s needs must occur

6 Design “Design is a process where we create and shape artifacts that solve problems. Good design is based off of years of experience, many prototypes, and lots of study. Software without good design can be full of more bugs, drift from the project specification, and be difficult to maintain

7 Software and Computer System Design
Standard software engineering seeks to meet 2 concerns… Reliability and error management Seeing projects be completed (delivery) and evolved (maintenance). Careful planning with a process model or waterfall model is used for reliability, safety, and security. Agile software develop methods are used for usability and evolvability

8 Design Thinking “Design thinking means to intentionally focus the design around the concerns, interests, and values of the users.” 3 basic principles Many Eyes Customer viewpoint Tangibility

9 Design and Innovation “Design and innovation are related, but not the same… The only time design thinking might accelerate innovation is when the ideation has been blocked by lack of ideas or by conflicts among key stakeholders.” Projects are 90% work on achieving an innovation and 10% Ideation.

10 Putting it all together
Design thinking puts more attention on creativity, imagination, collaboration, and users Combining a strong focus on error elimination and tolerance with design thinking will create better, more advanced software

11 Critique Cons: Felt like I was reading a script for a commercial until the last two sections of the paper Took an artistic approach to design instead of the concrete design patterns I was looking for Pros: Highlighted the tension between usability and robustness Emphasized software as a collaborative process
