1 Anti globalisation By: Jorge Jaimes

2 Learning goals Be able to identify the negative aspects of globalization Describe how it affects developing countries Define globalization by its negative aspects Been able to identify which are the aspects anti globalization Describe some of the goals of globalization Have an opinion on whether globalization is good or bad for the global economy

3 What is globalization? In the words of the Canadian government
“Describes the increased mobility of goods, services, labour, technology and capital throughout the world.“ But, what about groups against it? In the words of a group called “Anti-Marketing” it’s “The process of exploiting economically weak countries by connecting the economies of the world, forcing dependence on (and ultimately subservience to) the western capitalist machine."

4 Goals of Anti-globalization
Avoiding companies to move freely across borders, Extracting desired natural resources freely Utilizing a diversity of human resources Giving better work benefits to workers in less developed countries

5 So what’s the problem? The reason why groups like Anti-Marketing exist is because there are many disadvantages for the developing countries that are being used by the industrialized ones, such as poor

6 Some of the disadvantages are:
Millions lose their jobs due to imports or production shifts abroad. And most of them find jobs that pay less later on Because there are cheaper products available to the consumers, the local producers loss money and end up in debt lower wages and fewer employee benefits Lower health and safety standards Lower environmental protection standards Less protection for developing industries and countries Large companies take advantages of poor countries conditions

7 Against who are the anti-globalization organizations?
Most of the protests are made against the WTO, an organization who’s function is to help producers of goods and services, exporters, and importers conduct their business Solve any conflict that may occur between countries

8 Discussion question Why do you think these organizations are against the WTO (World Trade Organization)?

9 The TWO lacks transparency
The TWO lacks transparency. Even in one of its main functions - settling disputes through negotiation, it is unknown how settlements are made. WTO is seen as the henchman of stronger nations forcing agreements that allow them to exploit less developed nations. Because they pass anti-dumping acts to protect favored domestic industries while also opposing similar actions by less powerful nations.

10 Hazards of globalization

11 Contamination of the environment
The government of Galicia (Spain) is now considering the possibility of turning the entire zone into a open mine, because a Canadian company wants to extract all the gold “lost” in mines. This would generate large Amounts of contamination

12 For example: (CNN) -- Thousands of poor farmers in India have committed suicide over the past decade as changes in India's agricultural policy set off a widening spiral of debt and despair, one environmental activist said Tuesday. "The farmer suicides started in That's when the corporate seed control started," Vandana Shiva told CNN's Christiane Amanpour. "And it's directly related to indebtedness, and indebtedness created by two factors linked to globalization." For Shiva, who works with farming communities across India, those two factors were the ceding of control of the seed supply to the corporate chemical industry -- leading to increased production costs for already-struggling farmers -- as well as falling food prices in a global agricultural economy. An estimated 200,000 farmers have taken their own lives in India over the past 13 years, according to Indian government statistics.

13 "The combination is unpayable debt, and it's the day the farmer is going to lose his land for chemicals and seeds, that is the day the farmer drinks pesticide," Shiva said. "And it's totally related to a negative economy, of an agriculture that costs more in production than the farmer can ever earn." But Columbia University Economics Professor Jagdish Bhagwati, a former adviser to the Indian government, said that globalization was not responsible for the surge of suicides among cotton farmers in the Indian states of Maharastra and Andhra Pradesh. "There are other states in India where cotton seeds have been absorbed and which are really prosperous. So you have to ask, why is it that these are breaking out?" he asked. "What's happening is very much like the subprime mortgages in the United States, where a whole bunch of salesmen went out and sold mortgages to people who couldn't afford them."

14 Second discussion question
What’s your opinion on whether globalization is good or bad for the global economy

15 Video

16 Class activity One group is a transnational seed company that wants to enter a new country’s agricultural. They promise they’ll employ locals and will help the economy because their cheaper prices will aid costumers in saving money, and will give proper working conditions and benefits to their workers. A second group will represent local farmers that are protesting against the introduction of this company to their market, because this will cause them to lose their jobs. A third group will be the government, and you have to make a decision on whether allowing or not the introduction of this company

17 Back to learning goals Be able to identify the negative aspects of globalization Describe how globalization affects developing countries Define globalization Which are the aspects of anti globalization? Describe some of the goals of globalization
