5 Starter Have you ever wanted to make money and help people at the same time? Hopefully you should get a lively discussion about helping others, depending on the type of school you teach in this may be a high number wanting to help others or a low number and it is an opportunity to discuss what their motives are behind a business. Could be run as a poll on the students. 50% would help others AND earn money.

6 1) Research and planning phase
Research information about your local area Research existing social enterprises and which local needs they address Identify a local social need that is not being met Describe a new or existing social enterprise that could meet the need you have identified

7 2) Writing up phase You get 3 hours to:
Write up your final report in controlled conditions The three hours may be split over a number of sessions There is extra time to print and assemble the report before you hand it in to your teacher The answer of course is no the teacher cannot give any feedback during this phase During this phase do you think your teach can give you feedback about your report? YES / NO

8 What happens after you hand in the report?
There are no second chances or re-edits Work is then marked by your teacher Your reports are then standardised and moderated This can take months so you may not get your grade for a while Your teacher cannot tell you your grade until work has been moderated by someone from AQA

Your Local Authority is offering financial grants to social enterprises to encourage them to start businesses that address unmet needs in the local community which could be met by social enterprises. Lets start by defining some terms…

10 What do you think a Local Authority is?

11 Local Authority - defined
Local government today has 375 councils in England and Wales It is run by elected councillors, over 18,000 of them! Some councils have Mayors – is your council a town council, a county council, a parish council etc. Do you have a Mayor?

12 Examples of local authority services
Children’s services Housing • Pre-school education • Schools • youth, adult and family and community education • children’s and families’ services – including welfare, fostering and adoption and child protection • youth centres • youth justice • social housing • housing benefit and welfare services • homelessness

13 Put in the school postcode to find your local authority
It may be a town council, city council, county council or parish council depending on where you live. Local authority is another term for local council.

16 Circle the services you think local authorities are responsible for
Trick activity really, and hopefully they will spot that all of these things are the responsibility of the local councils. Not academy schools, they are no longer under council control, so not on this list, but just thought I would mention it.

17 What do you think a financial grant is?

18 Financial grants - defined
An amount of money given by the government to fund certain projects. This may include; charity work, social enterprises or scientific research among others. A grant is not expected to be repaid, but may have a long application process

19 What do you think a social enterprise is?

20 Social enterprises – as defined by AQA
“a business that is engaged in activities that aim to tackle social problems, improve communities, people’s life chances, and meet the social needs of people within the community”

21 Definition continued Social enterprises can be seen as businesses that trade and make a financial surplus and that will re-invest a proportion of that surplus back into the business in order to achieve their stated goals.

This is a quick introduction there will be much more later in section 3.0 research social enterprises – for now just give them a quick idea and move on. Plenty of time later to come back to this idea.

23 What do you think a local community is?

24 Local community - defined
A group of people who are considered a unit because they live in the same area, such as a city, town, village or they share a set of common interests, social group or nationality For example: “ There is a real sense of community among farmers in this area”

25 Let’s read the Scenario again now we understand the terms…
Your Local Authority is offering financial grants to social enterprises to encourage them to start businesses that address unmet needs in the local community which could be met by social enterprises. Can you rewrite this paragraph in your own words?

26 Identify areas of social need
You have been asked to identify areas of social need which could be met by a social enterprise that are not currently provided for by existing enterprises. You will be carrying out some research later in the controlled assessment

27 Report… You are required to write a report in which you demonstrate how one specific social enterprise could successfully meet a local need. Your report will need to have sections, a front cover and a series of appendices

29 Practical task Create the front sheet for your report – change the details for your own This information will also need to appear as a footer on every sheet you produce for your report Russell Fussell is a fictional name Also a copy of this front sheet is in the pack under 1.0 Understand the scenario if you wish to load it to a VLE as a scaffold for weaker students, they have 8 things to include, you could get them to pair and peer check they have included everything.
