Overview of IEEE Background Radio regulations in some countries allow secondary radio systems to operate in TV white spaces White spaces are not exclusively assigned to a particular radio system, any system that fulfils the requirements of the radio regulation can operate Correspondingly, there is a need for coexistence mechanisms between different white space radio systems IEEE has addressed this need by developing standard for TV white space coexistence methods

August 2014 7. Overview of IEEE Coexistence mechanisms Coexistence discovery mechanism is implemented in CDIS and CM Based on the information provided by each white space radio system this mechanism discovers radio systems that may affect each other performance and thus need to coexist with each other Coexistence decision mechanism is implemented in CM or white space radio system This mechanism selects high-level operating parameters of coexisting white space radio systems to improve their performance

Overview of IEEE Coexistence services The IEEE coexistence system provides either of the following two services to a registered white space radio system Information service: Within this service subscription a white space radio system is kept informed about its potential neighbors including their operating frequencies, potential interference levels etc; based on this information it can decide its operating parameters Management service: Within this service subscription a white space radio system receives reconfiguration requests that create such configuration of this white space radio system that its operation is improved according to some criteria
