1 International Civil Aviation Organization
GALILEO CAR/SAM ATN/GNSS Seminar Varadero, Cuba, 6 to 9 May 2002 International Civil Aviation Organization Presentation GNSS 4.3 by E. Chatre

2 GALILEO Overview High Level Architecture
Consist of 30 (27+3) satellites and associated ground infrastructure Best solution in terms of robustness and performance homogeneity, including northern latitudes Use CDMA signals on 4 frequencies Offer different services (OS-SoL-CS and PRS + SAR) Implement concept of Global Integrity Certify system performance Fully Operational by 2008

3 Space Segment Constellation Configuration

4 Open and Safety Of Life Signals
Signal Baseline Open and Safety Of Life Signals Signal Frequency Chip Rate Data Rate 1 1176 10MHz 50 2 1207 250 3 1575 2MHz 200

5 Space Segment Constellation Performance Horiz accuracy around 4m (95%)
Vertical accuracy around 8m (95%)

6 Space Segment GALILEO In Flight Configuration Satellite Payload
Overall Spacecraft: 650 Kg / 1.5 kW class Launcher Options: Ariane, Proton, Soyuz, …... Navigation payload: Kg / 850 W Search and Rescue (SAR) transponder: ca. 20 kg

10 Local Elements Viewed as an integral part of the overall system
-Recognised that a great many applications will require Local Elements i.e. Category III landing - Existence of capabilities considered and defined within the High Level documents of GALILEO Local services may be offered by the Galileo Operating Company or external service providers Possible to offer certified services where necessary Demonstrators of Local Elements will form part of the GALILEO development process and indicate achievable performance levels

11 Local Elements Performance Enhancement in the following:
Position, Velocity, Time Differential Code Carrier - TCAR Availability Pseudolite Integrity Time To Alarn (TTA), and alam limit Communication Single or bi-directional Voice, Data or Both Local Elements will offer different combinations of these enhancements to different extents over different service volumes Base level performances will be specified

12 GALILEO Schedule 4 Phases Definition Phase Development and Validation
Up to end 2001 Initial definition of the GALILEO requirements and architecture Development and Validation 2002 through 2005 Consolidation of Mission Requirements Development of satellites and ground based components In Orbit validation Deployment 2006 through 2007 Construction and launch of satellites Installation of complete ground segment Operations 2008 onwards

GALILEO a joint EU / ESA initiative Unanimous support from both ESA and EU councils EC politically responsible, ESA technically responsible Builds upon existing European experience in field of GNSS (EGNOS) Designed from a civilian perspective Independent from, but interoperable with other systems GPS, GLONASS, EGNOS, UMTS etc. Brings additional robustness for civil aviation Further information can be found at the following Web sites
