1 Health Lessons Healthteacher.com (Presentation Notes)
Teaching Health Education has always been a requirement in Elementary Schools. With the changes to the report card this year the subject of health has a new focus. Teachers are now required to give a health grade. This health grade should be a result of teaching the district identified health lessons through the Health CRMs. These lessons are taken from the newly updated CATCH curriculum and the online resource Healthteacher.com (CSHC Notes) Make sure you know where all of these lessons are located before you begin this presentation. Pat will walk you through it if you need. Make sure you are aware of how to sign up for HealthTeacher. We had a training last year to introduce Health Teacher. All of the teachers on your campus should have a log in. If they do not, start there when you get to that slide.

2 CSH Framework Roles Quality Physical Education
Coordinated School Health CATCH Team Health Lessons WOW Staff Wellness Brain Breaks (Presentation Notes) The Coordinated School Framework has six components. Teaching the Health Lessons is only one part. The other pieces are Quality Physical Education, Coordinated School Health, the WOW program, Staff Wellness, and Brain Breaks in the classroom. For our purposes today, we are talking about teaching the Health Lessons. (CSHC Notes) For this module, you will need to have internet access to be able to show them the links in school net where the lessons live

3 Today’s Goals Why are Health Lessons part of the framework?
Who’s responsible? What are they responsible for? What resources are available? Communication District Vision Summary (Presentation Notes) Today’s goals are listed on this slide. I will show you why the health lessons are a part of the Coordinated School Health framework as well as explaining who is responsible for each area and exactly what they are responsible for. I will also show you the resources available for teaching the health lessons, the communication from the district and the district vision for Health Education. At the end, I will wrap up what we have discussed today and attempt to clarify any questions you may have. (CSHC Notes) This presentation is an opportunity for your campus to be trained appropriately on the expectations of classroom teachers in regards to Health Education and the Health grade on the report card. Several campuses reported that classroom teachers were asking to use the PE grades taken on the health assessments in PE for Health grades on the report card. THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING!!! The health grade given by the teacher on the report card should be based on the classroom teacher health lessons taken from CATCH and Healthteacher. PE teachers teach health related PE TEKS in PE that overlap some of the required Health TEKS. Both sets of TEKS are important and required to teach to students. Health grades acquired in PE are a part of the overall PE grade.

4 Why Health Lessons? Teaching Health Education
Provides students knowledge, skills, and positive attitudes about health Teaches students about their personal physical, mental, emotional and social health Motivates students to improve and maintain their health, prevent disease, and reduce risky behaviors. Teaching the health TEKS is required by law (Presentation Notes) (Read the bullets) In our district, it is the classroom teacher’s responsibility to teach the Health TEKS. Students need have the opportunity to learn about: physical activity, nutrition, alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, injury prevention, mental and emotional health, prevention of diseases (CSHC Notes) If asked, the Health TEKS live in several content areas. Your teachers cover some during the health lessons. Some of them are covered in science. Some of the PE TEKS are similar to the Health TEKS but they are separate content areas.

5 Who is responsible for implementing Health Lessons
Coordinated School Health Chair (CSHC) Classroom Teachers (Presentation Notes) The people tasked with the implementation of the Health Lessons are the Coordinated School Health Chair and the Classroom Teachers (CSHC Notes) Go quickly to the next slide to show that you as CSHC DO NOT teach these lessons

6 CSHC Responsibilities
Provide training to the classroom teachers on the Health Lesson Implementation Module Support classroom teachers with ideas and resources to implement the health lessons (Presentation Notes) My job as CSHC is to support you as classroom teachers as you teach these lessons through training like we are doing today and suggesting additional ideas if needed. (CSHC Notes) Be very clear that you are not asked to teach their health lessons, you have your own health related lessons to teach as a part of your Physical Education TEKS

7 Classroom Teachers Responsibilities
Follow the district Health CRMs and teach the 5 identified health lessons per 9 weeks Provide a health grade on the students’ report cards using the district Health CRMs (Presentation Notes) The job of the classroom teacher is to follow the district Health CRMs and teach the 5 identified lessons per nine weeks. Teachers always have the option to integrate additional health concepts into their lessons at any time. These lessons can be taught at any time during the day. The original shadow schedule created several years ago scheduled the Health Lessons on PE days and/or inclement weather days. The other responsibility of the classroom teacher is to give a health grade on the report card each nine weeks. (CSHC Notes) If your teachers have not taught any lessons this year, don’t make a big deal out of it. Calmly suggest that they start with the CATCH curriculum and teach their way through that book for the rest of the year. That will at least give the students some Health information for this year.

Pat Werner, Health Lessons CATCH Curriculum (myTextBooks on the Cloud) Health Teacher Website AISD K-5 Teacher CSH Website Health Curriculum Policies (Presentation Notes) The information needed to teach the health lessons has already been created for the teachers. The CRMS for health education are in SchoolNet just like all other content areas. (click on the link and show them where they are in SchoolNet) The CATCH curriculum books are available on myTextBooks on the cloud. These were fomally known as my e-books. You just need to search “Elementary Health Education” (click on the link and go through the process with them) HealthTeacher is an online health education program that Dell Children’s Hospital is sponsoring for us for the next 4 years. Everyone in AISD is eligible for this subscription. All you need to do is sign up. (click on the link and walk them through the process if they are not already signed up) The AISD Health and PE website has other information on it that would help support classroom teachers. All Policies for Health Education can be found on this policy page. (CSHC Notes) Michele is now the Supervisor for Health Education as well as Physical Education. She and Pat are always available to assist campuses with any problems they are having with curriculum implementation. Do not be surprised if your teachers have never seen the Health CRMS. The message did not make it down to the teacher level at all campuses.
