1 ONTARIO STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

2 WHAT IS OSAP? The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is a financial aid program that can help you pay for college or university. OSAP offers funding through two kinds of money: grants: money you don’t have to pay back a student loan: money you need to repay once you’re done school

3 WHAT CAN OSAP BE USED FOR?
tuition books, equipment and supplies mandatory student fees a school may charge living expenses (full-time students only) child care (for students with children)

4 WHO IS ELIGIBLE? OSAP is open to Ontario residents of any age who are:
Canadian citizens permanent residents, or protected persons

5 WHO IS NOT ELIGIBLE? don’t meet the academic progress requirements
have enough financial resources, including other forms of government aid, to cover your expenses allowed by OSAP report income on your OSAP application that’s significantly different from what you reported to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) have defaulted on a student loan have grant or bursary overpayments or multiple outstanding loan overpayments failed a credit check declared bankruptcy or consumer proposal, or consolidation orders have reached your lifetime limit of student loan funding (340 weeks of funding, 400 weeks of funding for doctoral studies, 520 weeks of funding for students with disabilities) are an international student

6 HOW MUCH $ CAN YOU GET? The amount of money you can get depends on your: education expenses – the amount of money you need for tuition, books, child care, personal living expenses (full-time students), supplies and equipment course load – whether you’re a full-time or part-time student personal financial situation - based on you and your family’s income, family size, dependants and other factors If you use money from your Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP), it won’t affect how much OSAP you can get. Additional funding may be available if you are: Indigenous a current or former Crown ward a first generation student (the first in your family to go to college or university) a person with a disability

7 WHEN DO I APPLY? The applications for full-time students is now open. Apply early to get an estimate of the amount of grants and loans you could receive. This is a change from past practice of waiting until you have decided on your postsecondary destination.

8 STEP 1: REGISTER Visit to register for an account. You will need your Social Insurance Number (S.I.N.) to register. Don’t forget to write down your Access Number and password.

9 STEP 2: COMPLETE THE APPLICATION
This will take you approximately 15 minutes to complete. You will need: info about your school and program your parents’ or spouse’s SIN (if applicable) your tax information (income tax return) your parents’ or spouse’s tax information Complete an OSAP application for each school you have applied to if you do not yet know where you will be going.

10 STEP 3: SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION
The deadline to submit your application is 60 days before the completion of your study period.

11 STEP 4: PRINT AND SEND YOUR MSFAA
In the Spring, you will receive instructions to print your Master Student Financial Assistance Agreement. It must be submitted to a Canada Post Outlet. To do so, you will require government issued photo I.D. and proof of your S.I.N. number.

12 STEP 5: SUBMIT DOCUMENTATION TO YOUR FINANCIAL AID OFFICE
In the Spring, when you know where you have accepted, you will be given instructions to print and sign the required signature and declaration pages. Those, in addition to other documents, will be sent to your school’s Financial Aid Office.

13 STEP 6: MONITOR THE STATUS OF YOUR APPLICATION
Approximately 3-6 weeks after you have submitted all documentation, you can expect a response. Log in regularly to check the status of your application.

14 FINAL REMINDERS It is worthwhile for all students to complete and OSAP application First deposits will be required as early as June 1, 2018 Make an appointment with Ms.Aunger if you have further questions or need assistance
