Process Instruction Essays
Step-by-Step

What is a Process Essay?  An essay that explains how to do something or how something occurs. It presents a sequence of steps. These steps are not just bullet points; they are filled with definitions, warnings, caveats, and advice. Think about if you had to explain how to make a sandwich to someone who’s never made one before. Don’t write: What areas of study do you think you would use process essays in?

Organization This still looks like a traditional essay: Introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The difference comes in how you organize your body paragraphs. Instead of organizing your paragraphs by the strength of their arguments, your body should be ordered chronologically: in what order do these steps appear?  Also, some processes have MANY steps so instead of having 10, two-sentence paragraphs, group your singular steps into 3-4 stages Ex. Gathering supplies, mixing, and baking

Introduction STAMPy Hook
Bridge (what is this process? Why are they telling us about this? Why is it important?) Thesis Thesis statements for process instruction essays are a little different than a straight argument thesis. It may present the three major stages or just tell the reader that this is the best way or the quickest way to do something.

Thesis Examples  There are 3 crucial steps in baking brownies: gathering your supplies, mixing, and baking.  The best way to bake brownies is to first gather your supplies, mix your ingredients, and then bake the mixture.  The easiest way to learn how to skateboard is to start with balance, try turns, and then master jumps.

Example Intro IMAGINE YOU JUST GOT REJECTED BY YOUR CRUSH. YOU NEED TO DROWN IN YOUR SORROWS WITH A TASTY TREAT. DOUBLE CHOCOLATE BROWNIES ARE A DELICIOUS, EASY WAY TO EAT YOUR EMOTIONS AWAY. BAKING BROWNIES ISN'T HARD, EVEN WHEN YOU'RE SAD, BUT IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO IT, IT CAN BE A LITTLE DIFFICULT.  FOLLOW THESE three STEPS TO MAKE THE PERFECT BROWNIES TO CRY OVER.

Body  You should have a minimum of 3 body paragraphs, but no more than 5.  Think about grouping your small steps into larger stages – this will help you fill out your paragraphs and prevent repeating yourself too many times.  Topic sentences can still have a claim – why is this step important?

Conclusions Conclusions for process essays can be brief. Reiterate that this is the best or the quickest way to do this process and try to bookend with your hook.

Notes Although I’ve been trying to steer you away from using first and second person pronouns, certain process essays require the use of one or both. Don’t be afraid to get creative! Process writing fits great with sarcasm, humor, or crazy ideas (last year I had a student write an essay titled “How to Pick up Chicks”) HOWEVER: Do not go totally wild with this. It’s still an essay, so focus on your structure first. You will have a better grade with an essay that has a definite structure than you will with a creative essay that’s all over the place.
