Gothic Jack & Gothic Jill
Jack and Jill went up the hill To fetch a pail of water. Jack fell down and broke his crown, And Jill came tumbling after. Jack and Jill edged carefully towards the top of the gloomy hill. Its steepest point was shrouded in mist, making it almost impossible to see the ruined monastery that was situated somewhat precariously at the top. They dared not look down, for the ground seemed to have been swallowed up by the brambles below, thorns like fingers reaching towards them as if desperate to pull them towards their craggy graves. How has the story changed? What language is used to create the gothic atmosphere?

Changing Genres In groups, change your given nursery rhyme so that it is written in the gothic genre: Group 1: ‘Hickory, Dickory Dock’ Group 2: ‘Humpty Dumpty’ Group 3: ‘Itsy Bitsy Spider’ Group 4: ‘Hush a bye baby’ Group 5: ‘Little Miss Muffet’
