4 Information Prior to Printing press
Books were produced by hand They were written on surfaces of clay, papyrus, wax, and parchment.

5 Johannes Gutenberg he invented the PRINTING PRESS in
1456 (15th century) the printing press used MOVABLE TYPE - letters that could be used over and over again he first printed the Bible – GUTENBERG BIBLE

6 Protestant Reformation
The movement against the Holy Roman Church, sparked by Martin Luther because of corruption A religious movement of the 16th century that began as an attempt to reform the Roman Catholic Church and resulted in the creation of Protestant churches

7 Martin Luther A German monk who criticized the Roman Catholic Church. In 1517, he wrote the 95 THESES, or statements of belief attacking the church practices. INDULGENCE, a system in the Roman Catholic Church that granted full or partial remission of the punishment of sin.

8 16th Century Europe: The Reformation

9 John Calvin Calvin developed a theology that argued that humanity was SINFUL BY NATURE and that God predetermined which people would achieve SALVATION at the beginning of time. Calvin argued that the “elect” (people chosen by God for Heaven) should come together a form a UTOPIAN community free of sin.
