1 Date: Thursday, 20 September 2018
KQ: How do Christians and Muslims respond to the controversial issues of infertility treatment and transplant surgery? Starter: Match up the keyword with the definition TIF: - Can you remember any of the different types of fertility treatment? The method of fertilising a human egg in a test tube Artificial insemination Giving organs to be used in transplant surgery Embryo Injecting semen into the uterus by artificial means Infertility A fertilised egg in the first eight weeks after conception In-vitro fertilisation An arrangement whereby a woman bears a child on behalf of another woman Surrogacy Organ donation Not being able to have children

2 Why is infertility treatment controversial?
Women can have children past natural child-bearing age – the oldest mother in Britain was 57 Same-sex couples? High costs Often more than one embryo so spares will be disposed of Use your mini whiteboards to predict what Christians and Muslims might say about infertility treatment

3 Homework Questions 8, 15, 21, 25

4 10 minutes 10 minutes The Challenge
Work as a group to decide whether each statement is a religious argument for infertility treatment or against. Place on the Venn diagram. If you think that it could be used to argue both ways then place it in the middle. As a group, agree 4 clear statements to summarise the religion’s view on infertility treatment (scribe should write on sheet). Copy the 4 clear statements into your book (try to include key teachings.) Big Boss – Keep everyone on task & keep an eye on the time Reader – Read out each fact for the group to discuss Scribe – Write 4 clear statements to summarise the religion’s view TIF: Can you interpret the religious teaching in bold? What might it mean? Could it be used to argue for or against infertility treatment? 10 minutes 10 minutes Clarifier – Challenge your group to justify why they have placed each statement where they have

5 Christian arguments for infertility treatment
Christian arguments against infertility treatment

6 Muslim arguments for infertility treatment
Muslim arguments against infertility treatment

7 Christian attitudes to infertility treatments
Very conservative Christians would say that people should not have any form of infertility treatment because it is unnatural and that if God had wanted them to have children they would have them naturally. Some Christians accept the use of medicine and surgery but not assisted suicide. Liberal Christians accept any sort of infertility treatment

8 Muslim attitudes to infertility treatments
Most Muslims believe that as long as the egg and the sperm are from the married couple then treatment is acceptable. However, the use of donors in any way is not acceptable (adultery). Some Muslims believe that people should not have infertility treatment because infertility is a test from Allah and is part of Allah’s plan. Only Allah will decide who has children and who will not.

9 Reasons why some Muslims accept transplant surgery
Reasons why some Muslims do not accept transplant surgery Allah will reward Muslims who save people from death. Muslims should try to help everyone. “Whosoever saves the life of one person it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind.” (Qur’an 5:32) On the Last Day, the body will be resurrected so all the organs will be needed It saves lives and prevents suffering Only God can give life and take away life. The body is a gift from God. The Muslim Law Council (1996) issued a fatwa (legal announcement) allowing Muslims to carry donor cards and have transplants Transplant surgery may go against Allah’s plans Transplants do not dishonour the body The Qur’an teaches that the body is holy and should not be interfered with after death and buried as soon as possible. Reasons why most Christians accept transplant surgery Reasons why some Christians do not accept transplant surgery It is healing. Jesus healed when he was on earth so it follows his actions The body has been created by God and should not be interfered with. It is the temple of the Holy Spirit It is the most loving thing to do. Jesus commanded: Love one another (John 13:34) Transplant surgery is taking on the role of God and may be going against his plans. This violates the sanctity of life Only the soul goes to heaven, not the body, so it does not matter if organs are removed for transplant The organs are an essential part of an individual, which God has created and it would be wrong to replace part of it It is a way that people can show their gratitude for God’s gift of life and the body Poor people may feel forced into selling their organs

10 Underline all key teachings
Circle all key words Look back at your STs, LTs & PPE analysis – what are your targets? TIF: Can you add any more key terms or teachings? Remember to stick your sheet into your book. 5 minutes Choose one religion other than Christianity and explain why some of its followers are against transplant surgery. (8) Explain why some Christians agree with organ transplants and others do not. (8) “Organ donation should be compulsory” Do you agree?
