The Enigma Machine Matt Salamone and Pete McIlwee

2 Components of the Enigma Machine
Rotors-performs the substitution by rotating. Reflector-resends the current back through the rotors. Plug board manually pair two letters to each other (for example, to make F substitute for A and vice-versa).

3 How the Enigma Machine Works
Seven substitutions are performed on one letter entered. (Three from the rotors, one from the reflector and three again from the rotors.) Each rotor is scrambled and turns 1/26th of a rotation every substitution 15,576 different rotor states.

4 How it Works (cont.) The plug board enhances the Enigma’s scrambling mechanisms It was rewired by the operator, but it only effected a swap of the letters. It was still flawed, because it could not encipher a letter to itself.
