9 Five in a row everyone frozen faster unfortunately buzzing remember
crying emergency luckily early volcano important suddenly potato wonderful beautiful swimming September ambulance Wednesday January unluckily mountain jumping mummy This game is like noughts and crosses. You can play it as a whole class or group to introduce it, but it works more effectively if children play it in pairs. You need a grid of multi-syllabic words and two sets of different coloured counters or, if using it on the whiteboard, a way of indicating that a team has taken a word. The aim is to get five words in a row on the grid, in any direction whilst stopping other teams from doing the same. Choose multi-syllabic words which add value to children’s writing like common exceptions, days of the weeks, story connectives, topic vocabulary or words which have suffixes or prefixes added. If playing it as a whole class, divide the children into two Spelling Teams and ask one person from team A to choose a word to start their ‘five in a row’. The child has to read the word aloud or ask for help to do this from their team members. Next ask the whole class to clap out the syllables and ‘draw’ the chunks on their whiteboards in pairs. They could use boxes to do this so, would be a three syllable word like po- ta-to. Check that everyone has the right number of boxes, cover the word and ask the children to say and then write the word in their boxes. The pair then need to write the word underneath the boxes. Check that everyone has spelt it correctly and ask team B to choose a word. Continue until a team completes a ‘five in a row’ or until there are no more words left. This game may take some time, so it’s a good idea to do a few words a day. Ideally aim to train the children to play it independently in pairs and provide differentiated grids.

To add an element of competition, children can play against each other and the child to get the last word or have the most words, wins. Some root words can be prefixed by more than one prefix adding extra scope for totals. e.g. review and preview.
