10. Aftermath
The band was devastated following the bus crash because they not only lost a friend but a brother and mentor
The other band members always considered Burton to be their balance and what kept the band going
Knowing that Burton wanted them to continue, the band began looking for a new bass guitarist
Jason Newsted was chosen and played with Metallica until 2001 when he left the band for personal reasons. Danny Trujillo became the current bass guitarist in 2003.
Tragedy Strikes
On September 27, 1986, while on tour in Sweden for the Damage, Inc. Tour, Bass Guitarist Cliff Burton was killed in an accident
The band’s bus driver lost control of the vehicle and it rolled over several times
Cliff Burton was ejected from and crushed by the bus during the accident resulting in his death
Ulrich, Hammett, and Hetfield sustained no serious injuries in the accident

Metallica is considered one of the most commercially successful heavy metal bands in history considering the trials the band has had to endure
The band has sold over 110 million copies of their albums since the bands creation
Bands such as Godsmack, Machine Head, Trivium, and Avenged Sevenfold have all been quoted stating that Metallica was their inspiration and continues to be an influence on their music today
Metallica has not only limited itself to music but has also had several appearances and references in pop culture. The band has appeared on the Simpsons and has released several movies including its most recent concert/action film “Through the Never”
Since it’s creation in 1981, Metallica has tweaked its style to fit the new generation of fans. While this has not always been successful for the band, it has shown that the band is versatile and able to adapt to new demands from the heavy metal community
