1 Television : Innovation & Development of Technology
Engineering & Technology Management

2 Technology Development Categories :-
Mechanical Television (1907~1934) Electronic Television, CRT (Since 1936) - Black & White, Colour, Remote Control Digital Television (1970’s) Flat Plasma Screen TV (1987) AQUOS – Liquid Crystal Display TV (End 1990’s)

3 Image Resolution, Sound & Screen Criteria (CRT-Phosphorescent Screen)
The Television S-Curve Image Resolution, Sound & Screen Criteria AQUOS (LCD TV) Total (Multiple) Tech. Sub Tech. of TV Plasma Screen TV HDTV TV Digital TV Electronic TV (CRT-Phosphorescent Screen) Mechanical TV 1884 1907 1936 1954 1964 2000 onwards 1970 TIME (in Year)

4 Mechanical Television
Introduction Stage In 1884, Paul Nipkow was discovered the ‘rotating scanning disk’ principle. Growing Stage In 1907 , Paul Nipkov made 18 line image. In 1920~1929, John Logie Baird and BBC made 30 line image. Technology was outmoded in 1934.

5 John Logie Baird’s Mechanical Television System
Schematic above shows that Baird has improved Nipkov’s disk principle.

6 Electronic Television, CRT Introduction Stage
In 1897, Karl Ferdinand (German scientist) discover ‘cathode ray tube’ (CRT) with phosphorescent screen principle. Since 1907, CRT was developed by Boris Rosing, Zworykin and Farnsworth. In 1936, 1st television with 405 line image has launched by British Broadcasting Corp, Britain

7 Electronic Television, CRT Growing Stage
Since 1930’s, CRT technology was adopted by other countries such as Germany, France, USA and Russia. In 1953, Sharp (Japan) made their 1st television. Color TV (1954) : 1st launched by NBC, USA. Remote Control (1955): developed by Zenith Radio Corp., USA Mid 1960’s : company growth in many countries especially Japan such as Sharp, Panasonic (Matsushita) etc. Maturity Stage 1970’s : Most of competitors continue R&D to get better image and sound system

8 A few Electronic (CRT) Television Since 1934
1st Japan TV (Sharp) Germany TV BBC TV

9 Digital Television Introduction Stage
Mid 1970’s : based on semiconductor digital technology, A/D (analog/digital) and D/A converter for television system is produced. In Digital TV, user can make amendment to channel location, image sharpness, colour and sound volume by pressing +/-,</> button.

10 Digital Television Growing Stage (1980’s) Maturity Stage (End 1980’s)
System by processing signal in R,G,B (red, green, blue) component form is produced. Amendment in display become more user friendly. VTR (video tape recorder) – video can be plugged-in to TV. American company still be a leader manufacturer while Japanese company become the most competitor. Maturity Stage (End 1980’s) USA as a ‘Leader manufacturer’, Japan and other competitor input multifunction use such as : - Video Compact Disc, Games, Stock Exchange A large number of TV manufacturer growth from Korea and Taiwan. However, they are still under development stage.

11 High Definition Television, HDTV
Introduction Stage 1984 : 1st HDTV is launched by Panasonic (USA Branch) The image resolution is better compared to NTSC ( National Television System Committee, USA analog system). Growing Stage Capable to deliver picture and surrounding sound 6 times better. 1997 : Panasonic produced high end signal HDTV Zenith, Pioneer (USA); NEC, Fujitsu, Sony, Toshiba, Hitachi, Mitsubishi and Philips (Japan) are getting closer to achieve the competitive image.

12 Flat (Plasma) Screen Television
Introduction Stage 1964 : University of Illinois found ‘plasma display panel’ concept. Growing Stage 1987 : 1st flat plasma screen TV is produced by Zenith Electronic Corp., USA. Mid 1990’s Thin and wider screen up to 42” are produced by Panasonic (Japan) and other competitors.

13 AQUOS Television Introduction Stage Growing Stage
After Liquid Crystal Display are using for camera, computer screen and projector, then it is implemented at TV screen. Growing Stage End 1990’s : 1st AQUOS TV is produced by Sharp (Japan). Very thin and light, provides high performance alternative to Plasma TV

14 Review of Television Technology
Germany : Innovation of both Mechanical and Electronic TV tech. Britain : Initial manufacturing of TV USA : Leader in development of Colour, remote control and digital television. Japan : Leader in development of HDTV USA : Innovation of Plasma TV. However, Japan take over as a leader manufacturer. Japan : Leader in innovation and development of AQUOS – LCD TV. In general, large number of Japan manufacturers are trying to compete each other, while USA manufacturers are in the small number. Korea, Taiwan and China can be competitors in terms of low market price.

15 Future Television Based on computer microprocessor and IT growth :
- Antenna less. Image can be setup automatically using high definition image card (microprocessor system) - Program or channel from internet on-line all over the world. Once IT technology has reached a maturity stage. - Capable to call people in conversation program. Television consist of special telephone function.
