1 ET3003 Computer Networks For Electrical Power EngineeringStudents
Dr. Tutun Juhana Telecommunication Engineering Study Program School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics Institut Teknologi Bandung

2 Reference TCP/IP Protocol Suite, Fourth Edition, Behrouz A. Forouzan, McGraw-Hill

3 Why?

4 PLC

5 SCADA

6 Smart Grid

7 What’re we gonna be discussed

8 NetBIOS & NetBEUI XNS (Xerox Network Systems) DECnet AppleTalk TCP/IP IPX/SPX (Internetwork Packet Exchange/Sequenced Packet Exchange)

9

10

11 TCP/IP

12 In computer networks, communication occurs between entities in different systems

13 The analogy I used Sundanese, they only know Mandarin
Regepkeun ku maraneh naon anu arek ku kuring bahas I used Sundanese, they only know Mandarin They won’t understand

14 We agree to use English, they understand
Please listen! We agree to use English, they understand To use English we have to use proper grammar (rules in English)

15 Technically Speaking Set of rules that governs communication  Protocol

16 So.. how can they talk each others

17

18 They can talk because they use TCP/IP protocol in talking

19 The key elements of a protocol
Syntax Semantics Timing A protocol defines what is communicated, how it is communicated, and when it is communicated

20 Syntax refers to the structure or format of the data, meaning the order in which they are presented Semantics refers to the meaning of each section of bits Timing refers to two characteristics: when data should be sent and how fast it can be sent

21

22 Standards

23 Standards Organizations
Standards Creation Committees

24 Forum To accommodate the need for working models and agreements and to facilitate the standardization process, many special-interest groups have developed forums made up of representatives from interested corporations

25 Regulatory Agencies

26 Internet Standards (RFC)
Maturity Levels of Request for Comment (RFC)

27 RFC Requirement Levels

28 Internet Administration
ietf.org

29 Network Information Center (NIC)
Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) and Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) IANA, supported by the U.S. government, was responsible for the management of Internet domain names and addresses until October 1998 ICANN, a private nonprofit corporation managed by an international board, assumed IANA operations Network Information Center (NIC) Responsible for collecting and distributing information about TCP/IP protocols
