Studying Prose – ENG 2DI "Essays are how we speak to one another in print… a kind of public letter" Edward Hoagland

What is “prose”? All styles of writing fall into the category “prose”.
In English class, we usually mean the “study of essay writing”, with the intent that students will improve upon their own essay writing skills as they see examples of fine writing created by others. This is called “Prose Appreciation”.

Essays are generally categorized as:
Informal essays: less structure/organization, more colloquial writing style, focus on personal reactions/experiences, implied thesis (sometimes). Formal: very structured/organized, academic tone/diction, subject matter is often research based/impersonal, thesis is directly stated.

Your task! Form a partnership. Each partner needs a pen, some paper and a Sightlines 10 text. After reading “My Body is My Business”, complete the following questions

Answer each of the following questions: 1) Narrative Perspective- how can you tell? 2) Find four examples of Imagery- What does each example emphasize? 3) Identify two examples of Diction- What does each example emphasize? 4) Identify one example of a metaphor- What does the example emphasize? 5) Identify two Rhetorical Questions. What does each the Questions emphasize? 6) Find two examples of an Allusion-Why are these important? 7) Find one example of a symbol in the story- Why is this important? 8) What is the tone of the essay? How is this tone developed? 9) What is the thesis of the essay? Provide support for you answer using at least three of the Rhetorical Devices in the essay.
