1 Earth in Space & Time

2 A. Big Bang Theory The universe began with a tremendous explosion of matter, bright lights and intense energy. The universe began from one point billions of years ago and has been expanding every since

3 A. Big Bang Theory As with all scientific theories, the Big Bang Theory must be tested with observations and experiments

4 A. Big Bang Theory Astronomy allowed scientists to observe objects in space and eventually telescopes.

5 A. Big Bang Theory With the development of the rocket, we were finally able to physically explore space. Can be manned or unmanned

6 A. Big Bang Theory Scientists believe that the universe expanding, causing galaxies to move further apart.

7 A. Big Bang Theory

8 B. Organization of the Universe
Sun + planets Solar system Milky Way Universe

9 Why is space exploration and travel important
Why is space exploration and travel important? Provide an example of a benefit to Earth that has been obtained from space. It allows us to access information about the Sun and planets in our solar system. It is also used as a tool for understanding properties and processes of Earth. The discovery of the hole in the ozone layers was detected and visualized via artificial satellite. Space exploration is vital in obtaining data that can be further utilized for the betterment of humankind.

10 II. Technology and Space Exploration
Name two ways in which technology has been essential to space exploration: Responsible for unimaginable access to space Permits special satellites and cameras to take pictures of distant objects in space.

11 II. Technology and Space Exploration
B. One of the earliest forms of technology in space exploration was the telescope. Responsible for the discovery of many of the planets and their moons, which could not be seen from Earth. Limited in that they could only see visible light.

12 II. Technology and Space Exploration
What types of telescopes allowed astronomers to see beyond space dust and far into space? Large optical, radio, infrared and X-ray telescopes What did rockets, space shuttles, space probes, space stations and the like allow for? Communication of information, data collection and storage, measurements, sample collection, and computation involving space.

13 II. Technology and Space Exploration
Mars Rovers launched in 2003 Allows scientists to remotely collect data on Mars such as thermal readings, soil and water samples, and color images of landscapes Rovers collect data, analyze the samples, and send the information back to Earth

14 II. Technology and Space Exploration
Device Valuable because… Hubble Telescope Discovering other galaxies and determining what our universe actually looks like Satellite imagery One of the single most technological and scientific advancements in piecing together the puzzle of the universe Satellite-borne cameras Have helped scientists learn more about Earth’s environment (atmosphere, water, living organisms, etc.)

15 III. The Effects of Space Exploration on
III. The Effects of Space Exploration on the Economy and Culture of Florida List the ways that the U.S. space program has positively changed the economy and culture of FL Jobs: opening of the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral created jobs in aerospace and non-aerospace industries Taxes: corporate and personal income taxes raised have lead to economic growth in the state

16 III. The Effects of Space Exploration on
III. The Effects of Space Exploration on the Economy and Culture of Florida List the ways that the U.S. space program has positively changed the economy and culture of FL Tourism: generated revenues from millions of visitors worldwide Culture: people from European, Asian and South American countries relocate to the state, increasing diversity within the state

17 III. The Effects of Space Exploration on
III. The Effects of Space Exploration on the Economy and Culture of Florida List the ways that the U.S. space program has positively changed the economy and culture of FL Computer advancements: internet access, virtual reality and software development Health advancements: better digital imaging diagnostic equipment (CAT scans, MRIs, etc.)

18 III. The Effects of Space Exploration on
III. The Effects of Space Exploration on the Economy and Culture of Florida List the ways that the U.S. space program has positively changed the economy and culture of FL Other inventions developed from NASA technology: scratch-resistant glasses, enriched baby food, Global Positioning System (GPS), water purification systems, portable coolers/warmers, athletic shoes, weather forecasting aids, solar cells, voice-operated wheelchairs, fire-resistant materials, personal computers, telescopes and satellites.

19 IV. The Measurement of Distance in Space
Unit of Measurement Definition Example Astronomical unit (AU)  The average distance from the Earth to the Sun.  93 million miles; used primarily within the solar system. Light-year The distance light travels in a year ~6 trillion miles;  used primarily outside the solar system Light-minute  The distance light travels in a minute.  The sun takes 8 minutes to reach Earth, therefore it is 8 light-minutes away from Earth. Angstrom  The measure of electromagnetic radiation wavelengths. One hundred-millionth of a cm; the size of an atom is 3-10 angstroms.
