1 THE MOON

2 The Moon The moon is Earth’s natural satellite
We can only see the moon because of reflected sunlight Ocean tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon Phases of the moon are due to the changing position of the moon in it’s orbit compared to the Earth and sun

3 Moon = also referred to as lunar
Are natural satellites Believed to be around 4.6 billion years old No atmosphere Face tells its history, many impact craters Lunar rocks similar to Earth’s rock Hot or cold…no atmosphere

4 Lunar Origins….3 theories
2) Capture Theory: object was caught in Earth’s gravity and kept orbiting 1) Impact Theory: large object collided with Earth and molten material from Earth was blasted into space and caught in Earth’s orbit. Material then clumped together 3) Simultaneous Formation Theory: Formed at the same time as Earth

5 Moon Phases Caused by moon’s orbit around Earth and amount of sunlight received on its surface

8 What’s an eclipse? An eclipse is when a shadow is cast that blocks your normal view. In a lunar eclipse, the Earth gets in the way and blocks the view of the moon

9 In a Lunar Eclipse, the Earth’s shadow covers the moon

10 Solar Eclipse A Solar Eclipse is when the moon comes directly between the Earth and the sun. Safety Hint: Don’t ever look directly at a solar eclipse!

11 View of a Solar Eclipse

12 Eclipses: shadow of sun or moon
1) Lunar eclipse: Earth gets between sun and moon and shadow of earth falls on the moon 2) Solar eclipse: moon gets between sun and Earth and moons shadow hits Earth

13 Review Which lunar formation theory dealt with an object getting caught in Earth’s gravity? What 2 things cause the phases of the moon? How old is the moon believed to be? Why can the moon get so hot? The Earth is between the sun and moon, which type of eclipse will occur?

14 ..more Which phase? 8) Which phase?
