1 MOMENTUM Mini-Unit 3

2 WDYS (p.304)

3 WDYT (p.304) A small sports car hits a heavy truck in a collision. What factors determine the outcomes for the passengers of the two vehicles? Which driver will sustain worse injuries? Why?

4 VOCABULARY A-B-C Write the word in your journal
Define in your own words Draw a picture or example that helps explain the idea. Linear Motion Law of conservation of Momentum Momentum Elastic collision Impulse Inelastic collision Work-Energy Theorem Newton’s 2nd law Mass Newton’s 3rd law Velocity

5 NOTES (3-5 and 3-6) MOMENTUM and IMPULSE
What happens when two objects hit each other depends on the MOMENTUM of the objects in the collision. MOMENTUM is inertia and motion together –in other words, we are going to look at mass and velocity at the same time, AND their effects on each other. Because momentum depends on velocity direction matters!!! In other words…momentum is a VECTOR

6 “Momentum” can be TRANSFERRED to the second object in a collision.
The EVIDENCE for this transfer is that there is a change in motion to the object in the collision. The time during which the transfer of momentum happens is called the IMPULSE IMPULSE basically is the time in which a force acts DURING a collision Mathematically F*t

7 Video: Hewitt Drew it #25 Momentum Video

8 Momentum = mass X velocity
MOMENTUM MATH!!! Momentum (symbol ρ) of an object is equal to the product of the mass of the object and it’s velocity Momentum = mass X velocity p = m x v kgm/s = kg X m/s Magic Circle:

9 Model Problem SAMPLE PROBLEM: (model)
A car has a mass of 1000 kg and is traveling south at a speed of 52 m/s. What is it’s momentum?

10 Team problem (white board)
TEAM practice: (w/ partner) A horse is running at 40 m/s and has a mass of 500 kg. What is the momentum of the horse?

11 SOLO (in journal) SOLO practice (individual):
A truck traveling at 30 m/s has a mass of 1500 kg. what is its momentum? WORKSHEET #
