The fourth section within ICD-10-PCS is the Administration section. The character 1 value for the Administration section is 3.

4 Character 2—Body System
The value of character 2, body system, has three values for the Administration section. 0—Circulatory system (used for transfusion procedures C—Indwelling device E—Physiological systems and anatomical regions

5 Character 3—Root Operations
For the Administration section there are three root operations used: Introduction—Value of 0. An introduction is defined as “putting in or on a therapeutic, diagnostic, nutritional, physiological, or prophylactic substance except blood or blood products.”

6 Additional Root Operations for Administration
Irrigation—Value of 1. This is defined as “putting in or on a cleansing substance.” Transfusion—Value of 2. This is defined as “putting in blood or blood products.”

7 Body System/Region—Character 4
Character 4 in the Administration section indicates body system/region. The fourth character indicates the site where the substance is administered.

8 Approach—Character 5 There are five approach values for the
Administration section: 0—Open 3—Percutaneous 7—Via natural or artificial opening

9 Additional Approach Values
8—Via natural or artificial opening endoscopic X—External The approach for intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular introductions and injections is percutaneous.

10 Character 6—Devices For the Administration section, the sixth character specifies the substance being introduced into the body. ICD-10-PCS uses broad categories to define the substances, such as anti-inflammatory, antineoplastic, and gas.

11 Character 7—Qualifiers
For the Administration section, the qualifier value varies according to the table that is being used. For example: For Table 302, there are three qualifiers. For Table 3C1, the only value is Z. For Table 3E0, there are numerous qualifiers.

12 Key Points to Remember The first character value for the Administration section is 3. The second character value for the Placement section has three values: 0, C, or E indicating the body system. The third character value has three possible values indicating the root operation.
