This teacher professional development should be planned according to the goals system, school and individual needs. It needs to be clearly articulated and the progress monitored and evaluated to inform future needs.

وفقاً لمجلس أبوظبي للتعليم فإن خطة التنمية المهنية هي خطة سنوية يتم الاتفاق عليها بين المعلم والمدير ويتم فيها تحديد كيف سيتحسن أداء المعلم خلال فترة من العام الدراسي، خطط التنمية المهنية خاصة بكل معلم على حدة وتختلف بالاعتماد على احتياجات كل معلم والمصادر والوقت المتوفرين لتلبية هذه الاحتياجات. The ADEC PDP is an annual plan agreed to between a teacher and their principal and which addresses how a teacher will improve their performance over the course of a given year. PDP’s are specific for each teacher and will vary depending on the needs of the teacher, the resources that are available to meet those needs, and the time that is available. 1 minute Give participants a moment to read through the slide.

Is to promote and maintain a culture in which all employees are engaged in conversations about performance and its development Professional Development Planning is about job satisfaction, spending your days in a place where you feel valued and supported when carrying out your day-to-day tasks as well as when facing new challenges, where you can discuss your learning and that of others, and where improvement is planned for and does not just happen randomly and by chance. 2 minutes Key points to share: The Professional Development Plan is about all employees being engaged in conversations about performance development. It recognises the complex and often difficult jobs ADEC employees carry out and ensures they feel valued for the contributions they make. The PDP also ensures that school principals are aware of the professional development teachers need to feel comfortable about their work roles and confident that they can do their jobs to the best of their ability. This supports us in working toward our career aspirations.

PDP focus areas are identified through discussion with the Principal/leadership team and self-evaluation. The teacher evaluation, SIP and professional standards are also considered. What do I expect of myself and what do others expect of me? What are the work priorities for my school in the coming work period and what contribution will I make through my key work tasks? What are my career aspirations? What goals will I set for this work period to support these aspirations? What support/professional development do I need to build my capabilities to meet these expectations, undertake key tasks and achieve my career goals? The PDP is written and goals agreed between the teacher and Principal/leadership team. The agreed PDP needs to include goals, actions, support, and success indicators. The PDP is implemented PDP is monitored through ongoing and transparent discussions throughout the year. Monitoring should occur at an individual, collegial and supervisory level to ensure progress towards targets and redirection if necessary. Evidence is collected through a continuous process. How am I progressing with my key work tasks and my career goals? How are my capabilities developing as a result of the support and professional development I am accessing? How am I, my team leader and other members of the team supporting one another by giving and receiving feedback and providing progress updates on our work? How do I deal with new or competing issues or priorities? PDP review occurs with the intention of support and development. This review process will be used to identified foci for following year. What key work tasks have I completed successfully? What did I learn in completing these key work tasks? What are my strengths and how can I build on them? What areas do I need to focus on and how can I improve? What are my career aspirations and what pathways are available to me? What support and professional development do I need to continue to develop my performance? What can I do if I do not meet performance expectations on a regular basis?

(select areas that will have the greatest positive impact on student outcomes, teaching and your overall performance. Avoid selecting things that require only a ‘quick-fix’.)

How does this conversation assist the teacher to develop her PDP when the intent of the PDP process is considered? 15 minutes State that this video is an example of the way an employee may have a professional development plan conversation with their supervisor in the first phase – Clarifying work expectations and work focus. Point out the fact that the conversation acknowledges the strengths and also identifies areas the employee may focus on developing. Activity Distribute the video guide highlighting the purpose of the activity (final sentence in the setting the scene section) Watch the video Part 1 : Considering the teacher professional standards and the teacher evaluation tool from the previous activity in addition to the conversation in the video, participants get into pairs and interview each other in relation to the following questions. How does this conversation link to key documents? What strengths are identified for the teacher? What areas for development are identified? How does this conversation assist the teacher to develop her PDP when the intent of the PDP process is considered? Trainer to remind teachers of Tamkeen module 1 and make the link to Establishing Effective Learning Communities when discussing the second indicator. Part 2 : Using the indicators from the teacher evaluation tool attached to the video guide, teachers discuss what evidence they would expect to see to demonstrate each level in relation to the PDP process

A general statement such as ‘improve student results’ does not provide enough definition about the area and method of improvement. Can you measure the performance goals? If you can’t measure it in some way, you won’t know whether the goal has been achieved. Are the performance goals achievable or within your influence? Are the performance goals relevant? Do they contribute to the strategic goals of the school or the department? Is there a time period within which the performance outputs need to be achieved?
