What is Nonfiction? The people, events, places, and ideas presented in nonfiction are real, not invented. Nonfiction is written for a specific audience, or group of readers. It has a clear purpose, or reason for writing.

Today’s Goal Today we will learn about authors purpose in, in order to learn why people write nonfiction. LT: Students will be able to determine an authors point of view and purpose and how it is conveyed in the text. (CCSS RI 7.6)

Author’s Purpose P.I.E. are the three main purposes of nonfiction.
To Persuade Text that convinces you about a certain topic that has two sides. In school, this is called an argumentative essay. To Inform Text that teaches you about history, nature, or science. To Entertain Text that is easy to enjoy and understand that is about something people do for fun. Usually the topic is a hobby.

More P.I.E.? To Instruct Text that tells you how to do something in step by step instructions. CLUE WORDS: Many action Verbs like put, place, make, move, etc.

Example: Instruct Pre-heat your griddle to 375° or heat a nonstick sauté pan or skillet over medium heat. Sift together flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Beat eggs thoroughly. Add the eggs, melted butter and half the milk to the dry ingredients and mix gently until combined. Now stir in the remaining milk until the batter is the desired consistency. Don't overmix!

Author’s Point of View The author’s own feelings or beliefs reflected in their writing. Look at their choice words You can look for clues in the author's writing.

What is the author's P. O. V. on all day kindergarten
What is the author's P.O.V. on all day kindergarten? What clues told you? The average school day for kindergarteners is getting longer, and it's paying off in improved reading skills. Public schoolchildren who attended kindergarten for a full day showed more improvement than those enrolled in half-day programs. This improvement will be carried on in elementary school and even high school. These children will be able to get better jobs when they are adults.

What is the author's P.O.V. on all day kindergarten? What clues told you? The trend toward full day kindergarten programs in public schools is taking its toll on the young children of today. Recent studies showing improved reading skills may be misleading. This improvement in reading is unlikely to carry on as these children progress through elementary school.

The style and color of the text sends the reader signals about how to read the content. Text in bold, color, or italics draw the readers attention to important information. A wetland is a place where the ground is soaked with water for at least part of the year.
