Grammar Starter: Simple and compound sentences Definitions: Simple - A sentence which only has only one idea in it. Compound – Two simple sentences joined together with a connective. Examples: Simple - He put on his coat. He walked to the door. Compound - He put on his coat and walked to the door. Ask for pupils’ definition before showing the correct one. 3 Simple sentences A simple sentence needs two things: a subject and a verb. The subject does something in the sentence. The actions are verbs. My friend gave me a lift. Find the subject and verb in these sentences: 1) The cat ate my tuna sandwich! 2) Kelly is writing in her diary. 3) Some students like to study in the mornings. 4) Alex played football. 5) The hamster ran in its wheel. 4 Task time: create your own
Join these two simple sentences together to create one compound sentence. Mrs Thomas wanted a bath. She’s had a hard day at work. It is cold outside. We still went to town. I love ice cream. My favourite flavour is raspberry ripple. He bought two tickets. They were very expensive. He sat down. He was tired. Let’s eat dinner. I am very hungry. Hear feedback.
