3. 1. You will be assigned a term from the list on the board
1. You will be assigned a term from the list on the board. Work with your partner(s) to properly define the word. If the word has substantially different possible meanings, use the one you think most likely to come up in a historical context.
2. Create a short dialogue with your partner(s). I don’t care if you write it down or merely talk through it several times, but come up with one. You’ll have about 10 minutes to prepare, so no time to waste!
3. Your dialogue should be seconds long and use the word properly at least 5 times.
4. The word should be used in such a way that someone listening who does NOT know the meaning of the word would be able to discern the meaning from your dialogue.
5. Your dialogue should use as many forms of the word as reasonably possible. (For example, if your word is ‘pardon’ you can use ‘pardon’, ‘pardoned’, ‘pardoning’, ‘unpardonable’, etc.)
6. You may NOT bring paper or anything else written to the front of the class with you when you do your dialogue (we don’t want to be read to).

6. European Exploration of North America

7. The Native Americans had lived in the Americas for about 40,000 years and they had many advanced civilizations such as the Incas, Mayans, and Aztecs.

8. The Vikings had sailed to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia in North America about 1000 A.D. following Leif Eriksson. Eriksson settled in an area called “Vinland” or “Vineland”. After a few years of fighting Native Americans the Viking moved back to Iceland and told of their adventures in “Sagas”. They were the first Europeans to explore and settle North America.

9. The American continent was unknown to the Europeans until Christopher Columbus “discovered” it in 1492 for Spain while looking for a way to India. Columbus was looking for a trade rout to Asian spices. His discovery lead to a transfer of plants, animals, and diseases between the “Old World” and the “New World”, it was called the Columbian Exchange. From Europe came wheat, horses, cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, and chickens. From the Americas came Maize (corn), potatoes, beans, tomatoes, peppers, peanuts, and pineapples. European diseases killed millions of Native Americans.

11. It took Amerigo Vespucci to realize that there was another land between Asia and Europe. He discovered that the animals and people he met were “New”. A German mapmaker misreading Amerigo’s maps labeled the new maps he made, “America the New World”. “America” was named for him.

12. Spain and Portugal quickly established dominance by establishing colonies in the New World, having conquered the Aztecs, Mayans, and Incas and taken their gold. They were looking for the three “G”s, GOLD, GLORY, and GOD.

13. The Spanish
The Spanish explored the North American continent for 3 main reasons.
To find riches (Gold)
To spread religion, or Christianity (God)
To expand their empire (Glory)
They explored and eventually settled land in present-day Florida, Southwest United States, Mexico, and the islands in the Caribbean.

14. Northwest Passage
While Spain and Portugal were busy exploring Central and South America, other European nations turned to North America.
France, England, and the Netherlands looked to find a way through or around North America; they called it the “Northwest Passage”.
There is NO navigable Northwest Passage.
Of all European countries France had the best relations with Native Americans, only wanted to trade not conquer.

16. France tries to create it’s own empire in America.
France found no gold, but, found that trade with Native Americans could be very profitable.
The French built “New France” on Fish and Furs.
France would be the empire that would have the best relations with Native Americans.

17. The French The French explored North America for these reasons:
In search of a water route through the New World known as the Northwest Passage (all three European countries were in search of a faster, cheaper trade route to Asia)
A source of wealth through fur trade with the Native Americans
To convert Native Americans to Christianity
They explored Canada, the Louisiana Territory, and islands within the Caribbean; they eventually set up forts and settlements.

18. Netherlands
“New Netherlands,” the Dutch built the trading center New Amsterdam; now present day New York City, Manhattan Island.

19. England hoped to become as rich as Spain by establishing colonies of their own in the Americas. They came for 4 reasons:
-The first was economic as they hoped to find gold, and wealth.
-Another reason was social or cultural factors as many debtors in European prisons were sent to establish a new colony.
-Others came for religious freedom.
-Finally, some came for political reasons as the English sent more troops to the colonies to prevent further spread of the Spanish, French, or the Dutch in the Americas.

20. The English The English explored North America for these reasons:
In search of sources of wealth (gold)
Convert Native Americans to Christianity
Claim land for England
England saw the North American natural resources as means for gaining wealth and international stature. Explorers risked their lives for fame, curiosity, and pride for their nation.
The English Colonial Era will start in 1607 with the first permanent settlement at Jamestown. This success will lead to the founding of 13 colonies in America.
