Isaiah 1:4-6 1.4 Ah, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity,
Seed of evildoers, sons of corrupters! They have forsaken the Lord, They have despised the Holy One of Israel, They have turned backward. 1.5 Upon which place will you yet be smitten? You will still continue to rebel, The whole head is sick, The whole heart is diseased. 1.6 From the sole of the foot even to the head There is not a sound spot, Only bruises, stripes and running sores, Not pressed out, nor bound up And not softened with oil. Isaiah 1:7-9 1.7 Your country is devastated,
Your Cities burned with fire, Your land in your very presence is devoured by aliens And utterly ruined in the customary manner of aliens. 1.8 And the daughter of Zion is left Like a hut in a vineyard, Like a shack in a melon field Like a city under siege. 1.9 Except the LORD of Hosts Had left us some survivors, We would have been almost as Sodom We would have been like Gomorrah. Analysis of Isaiah 1 The first chapter is an introduction and a prologue to the whole collection of Isaiah's messages. Verse 1. The Heading of The Book Verses 2-9. The nation is charged with gross ingratitude to Jehovah, with apostasy and complete moral corruption. Verses Israel's worship of God is hypocritical and an attempt to cover up her moral perversion and iniquity. There follows a call to repentance before the wrath of God will come upon the whole nation in judgment. Only a repentant remnant shall escape destruction, but the rebels and sinners shall be consumed. The Book of Isaiah 9/19/2018

Isaiah 1:1 1.1 The Vision of Isaiah, the son of Amoz,
which he saw Concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. In Hebrew the words "haza“ - to see, and "hazon“ - vision, are expressions which describe spiritual perception. The root is a technical term which refers to a revelation imparted by God to His chosen servants, the prophets. "the vision of Isaiah" means the revelation which God gave to His prophet Isaiah. Isaiah 1:1 1.1 The Vision of Isaiah, the son of Amoz,
which he saw Concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. Isaiah's prophecies are directed primarily to his own native land Judah and its spiritual and political capital Jerusalem and the northern kingdom of Samaria. However, Isaiah's vision ranged far beyond the states of Judah and Israel to include all mankind as seen from the standpoint of God's eternal purpose and of His future Kingdom. Israel's ultimate destiny was always in the center of Isaiah's vision. Isaiah saw the restoration and redemption of Israel as having redemptive significance for all nations. Isaiah 1:1 1.1 The Vision of Isaiah, the son of Amoz,
which he saw Concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. The length of the prophet's ministry is a period of approximately 55 years. Assuming that Isaiah began his ministry shortly before the death of Uzziah, 740 B.C. Isaiah 1:2 1.2 Hear, O heavens, give ear, O earth For the Lord has spoken: I have reared sons and raised them up, But they have rebelled against me. in Hebrew: Shimu shamaim, ve-hazini eretz. These are alliterative words, skillfully employed by the prophet to heighten the sense of outrage. The Lord appears as plaintiff against His people Israel charging them with rebellion. Israel's sin is so enormous, and so disturbing to the divine order of the universe, that no lesser witnesses than heaven and earth will do. The Book of Isaiah 9/19/2018

The song of Moses in Deu 32:1 begins in a similar manner: Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak, And hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. In both Deuteronomy 32 and Isaiah 1, Israel is charged with gross ingratitude, spiritual perversion, and iniquity. For the Lord has spoken: I have reared sons and raised them up, But they have rebelled against me. Isaiah makes it unquestionably clear that the words to be spoken and delivered are not his own, but those of the Lord Himself. Heaven and earth must listen "for the Lord has spoken." For the Lord has spoken: I have reared sons and raised them up, But they have rebelled against me. I have reared sons and raised them up The two verbs, reared and raised, "giddalti ve-romammti" have a dual meaning. They describe the process of bringing up children to full maturity, but they also mean "to make great and of high stature." Israel's claim to greatness is based not on her own merit or greatness, but on what the Lord Jehovah has done for her. The Book of Isaiah 9/19/2018

For the Lord has spoken: I have reared sons and raised them up, But they have rebelled against me. But they have rebelled against me — "poshu be." The charge against the nation is rebellion: The words mean literally "transgressed against me," They are often used in a political sense, as when a subject becomes disloyal to his sovereign lord, or a subject nation to its overlords or masters. Israel does not know, My people do not understand! Even the proverbially dumb animals, such as the ox and the ass, have sufficient sense to understand who is their master and who provides them with their daily food and shelter. Israel does not know, My people do not understand! Isaiah is chiefly the prophet of Judah, but he addresses himself on behalf of Jehovah to all of Israel - to the whole nation north and south. Divided politically for over two centuries, still in God’s plans and purposes the division was artificial; temporary. Spiritually and eternally they were one nation — Israel. In spite of their rebellion, ingratitude and sinfulness, God still calls them "ammi“ — my people; a glimmer of His mercy. The Book of Isaiah 9/19/2018

Seed of evildoers, sons of corrupters! They have forsaken the Lord, They have despised the Holy One of Israel, They have turned backward. "Hoi Goi hoteh“ — Ah, sinful (literally "sinning") nation "Hoi Goi" is one of the numerous alliterations Isaiah uses in order to express outrage or exasperation. In verses 2, 3, Jehovah Himself appears as the accuser of His people; Now, verses 4-9, the prophet presses home the charge of rebellion. The Book of Isaiah 9/19/2018

Seed of evildoers, sons of corrupters! They have forsaken the Lord, They have despised the Holy One of Israel, They have turned backward. This nation is not only sinful, but has made sinning a habit. Instead of being a "Goi kadosh," a holy nation, They are a "Goi hoteh "— a sinful nation, A people weighed down, or laden with iniquity which is pulling them down into an abyss. The sinful condition of Israel was not just the condition of the prophet's own generation but resulted from the cumulative effect of long generations of sinners. Seed of evildoers, sons of corrupters! They have forsaken the Lord, They have despised the Holy One of Israel, They have turned backward. Their sin was not merely the result of spiritual indolence, or a passive drifting away from God, but a positive act of defiance and despising "the Holy One of Israel." This is the first time Isaiah uses his favorite description of God - "the Holy One of Israel," This description of God is peculiar to Isaiah with a few exceptions in Jeremiah and some Psalms. This nation so singularly privileged and chosen to be "am segulah" - a chosen people, Instead of growing in the knowledge of their Lord, have gone back to their pagan origins. You will still continue to rebel, The whole head is sick, The whole heart is diseased. In verses 5-6 the nation – northern and southern kingdoms - is viewed collectively as a single highly diseased body. There is not one sound place left in the whole national body In their blindness they continue to rebel inviting further disasters. The Hebrew word "al-me" is best translated "upon which place" or "where else," Isaiah views the whole nation as one body. The Book of Isaiah 9/19/2018

You will still continue to rebel, The whole head is sick, The whole heart is diseased. 1.6 From the sole of the foot even to the head There is not a sound spot, Only bruises, stripes and running sores, Not pressed out, nor bound up And not softened with oil. The head and the heart are sick, The whole body from head to foot is without a sound spot. Isaiah 1:6 1.6 From the sole of the foot even to the head
There is not a sound spot, Only bruises, stripes and running sores, Not pressed out, nor bound up And not softened with oil. Here we have an interesting bit of ars medica, the medical art, as practiced in the days of Isaiah. Bruises, sores and fresh wounds were pressed out to remove dirt and pus, Then, after being treated with oil to soften swelling and as a soothing agent, the affected part of the body was bound up-or bandaged. Your Cities burned with fire, Your land in your very presence is devoured by aliens And utterly ruined in the customary manner of aliens. The tragic situation of the country is of a land which has been devastated by the repeated invasions and incursions of foreigners and has in recent years experienced the terrible atrocities at the hands of its ruthless and powerful neighbors. Verse 7 seems to fit the situation of Judah in the days of Hezekiah soon after Nebuchadnezzar due to divine intervention, withdrew from Jerusalem in 701 B.C., but not before he inflicted upon Judah terrible blows. Your Cities burned with fire, Your land in your very presence is devoured by aliens And utterly ruined in the customary manner of aliens. Many fortified cities of Judah were taken by the Assyrians and a great multitude of important people were carried away into captivity. These were blows from which Judah never completely recovered. Eventually, after a little more than a century, Judah succumbed completely to the successors of the Assyrians, the Babylonians. The Book of Isaiah 9/19/2018

The term describing the national catastrophe uses the term "K'mah-pecheth zarim“ — "Like the overthrow of strangers (or aliens) , This is term which to the Hebrew ear would bring to memory "the overthrow of Sodom" (Gen. 19:25-30). "The overthrow of strangers (or aliens)" was so thorough as to be comparable to that of the cities of the plain. The Book of Isaiah 9/19/2018

Isaiah 1:8 1.8 And the daughter of Zion is left
Like a hut in a vineyard, Like a shack in a melon field Like a city under siege. Deprived of her surrounding strongholds and the supporting cities of the Judean kingdom, not to mention the already captured sister state of Samaria, she was isolated and apprehensive about her future. Isaiah's picture of Jerusalem's helpless situation is striking and vivid. Her strength is no greater than that of a flimsy hut erected for the watchmen of a vineyard or that of a shack in a melon or cucumber field, familiar sights in the Holy Land even today. "A Remnant Shall Return" (Isa. 7:3).
Isaiah 1:9 1.9 Except the LORD of Hosts Had left us some survivors, We would have been almost as Sodom We would have been like Gomorrah. The prophet identifies himself with his own nation saying: …us… “survivors” = Heb: "śârı̂yd" H KJV translates it as "remnant." "śârı̂yd" (sometimes used with a companion word "pleita“ — fugitives) applies to those who have survived a disastrous battle or a catastrophe, like Lot and his family survived after the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. When Isaiah referred to the "remnant," he used the Hebrew word “she'âr" H7605 (Isa. 10:21, 22; 11:11, 16) – remainder, residue Isaiah named his own son "Shear-Yashub" "A Remnant Shall Return" (Isa. 7:3). It indicates the end of a passage "parashah".
Isaiah 1:9-10 In the Hebrew text, between verses 9 and 10 there is a small open space which is called "piska" or a pause. It indicates the end of a passage "parashah". Even when you do much praying I do not hear—your hands are full of blood. 1:16 Wash yourselves, cleanse yourselves, Remove the evil of your deeds from my sight, Cease to do evil. 1:17 Learn to do good, seek judgment, Restrain the oppressor, do justice to the orphan. "The word of God" and "the law of God" are equated.
Isaiah 1:10 1:10 Hear the word of the Lord you chieftains of Sodom Give ear to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah! This verse begins with the same word as verse 2, "hear." In the face of God's anger and approaching judgment, the people are solemnly summoned to hear "the word of the Lord" and "the law of our God." "The word of God" and "the law of God" are equated. Give ear to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah! The "Law of Moses" (really the Law of God delivered by Moses) was composed of ritual and moral ordinances, designed to regulate all of a man's life, his relationship to God and to his fellow men. Man whether ancient or modern, was always inclined to make the ritual and ceremonial aspects of "the law" the center of his religion, ignoring the moral and spiritual intent of "the law." This was true of all religious men in every generation. The prophet's anger was not directed against the religious cult but rather against the mechanical and superficial observance of a ritual without aspiring to conform to the holiness and righteousness of God. Isaiah 1:10 1:10 Hear the word of the Lord you chieftains of Sodom
Give ear to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah! Isaiah previously compared Jerusalem (v. 9) to the desolate cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Now the prophet compares Jerusalem's spiritual and moral condition to that of those two degraded cities. The rulers and the people of Judah were as sinful and wicked as the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. Not since Moses had any prophet dared to address himself to his people in such scathing and insulting terms. Isaiah's indictment was designed to cut to the quick, and to challenge their self-esteem and pride. A people whose conscience had been seared by generations of habitual sinning and smug self-satisfaction, had to be made aware of their apostasy and of the wrath of their God. Shall we escape Israel’s ancient fate?
Isaiah 1:10 1:10 Hear the word of the Lord you chieftains of Sodom Give ear to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah! About a century later, the prophet Ezekiel, in a similar manner, compared Jerusalem with Sodom and Gomorrah: “ This was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy" (Ezk. 16:49). Israel's condition was in many respects similar to that of our modern society. These words pointing to Israel's arrogance, overweening pride, to the corrosive influence of too much affluence and leisure and to the callous indifference of the rich to the plight of those we would call "the underprivileged" and "the have-nots“, have a strangely modern ring to them. Iniquity and festive crowds I cannot bear. 1:14 The new moon, the sabbaths, I cannot stand, Iniquity and your calling of assemblies my soul hates. They have become a burden to me, I am weary from bearing them. Isaiah knows that the people will point with pride to their religious orthodoxy; to their diligence in offering all the required sacrifices; to their painstaking observance of the sabbath and the feasts; to their faithful participation in the Temple worship, and their numerous prayers. Isaiah declares that all this has become repugnant to Jehovah. God cannot endure religious orthodoxy and moral depravity. The redundance in verses is deliberate intended to emphasize how tedious and insufferable all their endless sacrifices, their festive assemblies and even their prayers have become to God. I shall hide my eyes from you. Even when you do much praying I do not hear—your hands are full of blood. If we assume that all the religious people of Isaiah's time were hypocrites or that their prayers were insincere we would be missed the fact that their problem went much deeper than that. They had come to believe, just as many other "pious" people in every generation have, that being "religious" and "observant" could replace a holy and humble walk with God or a righteous and a compassionate relationship to their fellow-men, especially to the poor and needy. I shall hide my eyes from you. Even when you do much praying I do not hear—your hands are full of blood. The usual posture of an Israelite at prayer was to spread his hands above his head with hands held palms upward. When praying hands are covered with blood, God cannot hearken to their prayers, but cam only see innocent blood dripping from their palms. Their very display of piety with blood-stained hands was itself blasphemy. By their "pious activities" they were unconsciously reducing Jehovah to the level of the deities of their pagan neighbors who were as immoral and unconcerned about righteousness those who worshipped them. All these pagan gods demanded of their worshipers was bloody sacrifices and homage. He who would approach the God of Israel must do so only with clean hands and a pure heart. Isaiah 1:16 1:16 Wash yourselves, cleanse yourselves,
Remove the evil of your deeds from my sight, Cease to do evil. Up to this point Isaiah was telling his people what the Lord did not require of them. Now his approach becomes positive, making clear what God does require of them. "Wash yourselves, cleanse yourselves" are synonymous expressions, although having a somewhat different connotation. "Rahatzu“ — wash yourselves refers to physical cleanliness. Metaphorically speaking, it refers to the removal of the filth of wickedness. "hizzaku“ — cleanse yourselves refers to an inward cleanliness. A godly Israelite is one who not only refrains from evil deeds, but one who is also inwardly clean. The Book of Isaiah 9/19/2018

Isaiah 1:17 1:17 Learn to do good, seek judgment,
Restrain the oppressor, do justice to the orphan. Plead the cause of the widow. True righteousness must be expressed in acts of righteousness. Goodness has to be learned and practiced until it becomes second nature. The word for justice here is "mishpat“ — literally "judgment." It is more than mere legal and formal justice, it is the justice which springs from a heart which has been cleansed by the Spirit of God. The Book of Isaiah 9/19/2018

Restrain the oppressor, do justice to the orphan. Plead the cause of the widow. The oppressor must be restrained and not allowed to become a law unto himself. Only when the oppressor is restrained can justice prevail. The Book of Isaiah 9/19/2018

Restrain the oppressor, do justice to the orphan. Plead the cause of the widow. In the Scriptures, the orphan, the widow and the stranger always personify those who in a special way need the protection and compassion of the community. They are the poor, the needy and the helpless. A nation's moral health or sickness can be judged from the way they were treated. The Law of Moses from the very beginning required compassion for them. Restrain the oppressor, do justice to the orphan. Plead the cause of the widow. Just as Isaiah sternly rebuked "the pious" men of his day for their sham piety, so did Jesus seven centuries later accuse "the religious" men of His day: (Mt. 23:23). Men have always found it easier and more pleasing to their vanity to comply with ceremonial rites and the external aspects of their religion than to conform to God's purpose. Justice and compassion can never be replaced by religious orthodoxy. Only when the people will seek to conform to the moral intent of the law can God deal with them in mercy. ISAIAH 1:18-20 1:18 Come now and let us reason together, saith your Lord. If your sins be like scarlet, They shall become white as snow. If they be red as crimson, They shall become as wool. 1:19 If you consent and obey, You will eat the good of the land. 1:20 But if you refuse and resist —the sword will eat you, For the mouth of the Lord has spoken it. In their present state of disobedience and rebellion, Israel's covenant relationship with God had been deeply strained. ISAIAH 1:18-20 1:18 Come now and let us reason together, saith your Lord. If your sins be like scarlet, They shall become white as snow. If they be red as crimson, They shall become as wool. "Come now“ — "Lehu-na- the usual form of appeal and encouragement. "Let us reason together." Assuming a change of heart by them, God would be willing to deal with them as a Father with His children, not on the basis of retributive justice, but of grace, and would forgive them freely. "Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips" (Isa. 6:5a). It is this identification with "the house of Jacob" which authenticates the true prophet. Those who only harp and carp upon the sins of Jacob, without being heartbroken and without sharing in the tragedy of their own people, are not bona fide servants of God, but enemies of Israel. The land is also filled with idols produced locally which the common people and their leaders worshiped. Wealth has induced a false sense of security and boosted their national pride. And the prominent man humbles himself, Forgive them not! "Forgive them not!" The prophet reaches the climax of outrage when he cries out in an apparent fit of anger and frustration. This momentary lapse of Isaiah's usual compassion for his people can only be explained by the depths of the prophet's anguish as he looked on helplessly at the growing spread of injustice, idolatry and the corroding influence of wealth, side by side with the increasing arrogance and smug self-assurance of the leaders of Judah. ISAIAH 2:12-22 All their false pomp and glitter is destined to come to a fearful end. Isaiah counsels his people to hide themselves in the rock and in the dust from before the terror of the Lord and His majesty which will soon be made manifest. In the end, when all man's proud achievements will have turned into dust and ashes, Jehovah alone will be exalted. In verses 9, 11 and 17, Isaiah uses two different expressions for "man" or "men": "adam" is man whom God made out of dust, the word "ish" is man in his full human dignity and valor (cf. the Latin "homo" and "vir"). "The commander of fifty" is the equivalent of a junior officer or sergeant in our modern military order. The judge and the prophet and the elder represent established and legitimate authority. The diviner, the skilled magician and the expert enchanter, are the popular but forbidden and unlawful counselors to whom the mass of the people have so frequently resorted, in defiance of Jehovah Himself, and of His Law (Deut. 18:9-14). The approaching disaster of Jerusalem and Judah is self-induced, the result of their wicked tongues and acts which “defy the glorious presence of the Lord" (lit. the eyes of His glory) . The practice of sin has left its stigma upon their faces, which gives them away just as the sins of Sodom could not be hidden. "Woe unto their souls, they have done harm to themselves!" Isaiah 3:24-26 Living in the shadow of a continual menace of hostile invasions, Isaiah foresaw the inevitable calamity which eventually was to destroy both kingdoms. His predictions were fulfilled in the history of Israel on numerous occasions, especially the Babylonian invasion of 586 B.C. and the final Roman captivity. When Jerusalem was captured and the Temple leveled to the ground by the Romans in 70 A.D., the emperor Titus struck a commemorative medal, depicting the daughter of Zion sitting on the ground under a palm, mourning. The inscription on the medal was "Judea Capta." Titus may have had the words of Isaiah 3:26 in mind when he struck that medal. The Book of Isaiah 9/19/2018

Describing the situation which will prevail in Jerusalem after the men of Judah shall fall in battle. So few eligible men will be left, and women will be so desperate to marry, that seven of them (or any large number) will take hold of any surviving man, imploring him to marry them, even if they should have to support themselves, in order to avoid the disgrace of spinsterhood and childlessness. The first woe is directed against the greed of some landlords and plantation owners who oppressed their poorer neighbors. Men of wealth were ruthless in their acquisition of property, squeezing out the poor and the helpless from their homes and depriving them of their small lots. As another punishment for their greed, the Lord will send upon their fields a failure of harvest resulting in famine. A homer of seed, (48 gallons) will produce one bath, 1/10 of an homer, less than 5 gallons, a disastrous return. Uzziah died after a reign of fifty-two years, beginning at age 16. In many ways Uzziah was a good and successful king. 2 Chr 28:5 (Uzziah is called Azariah in 2 Kings 15:1-7). He subdued most of the hereditary enemies of Judah. He turned Jerusalem into a fortified bastion and equipped the city with the most modern weapons of war of his day. Isaiah 6:1 Five years before Uzziah died Tiglathpileser III ( B.C.), the ambitious warrior king of Assyria, suddenly appeared on the horizon of the Near East. His intent was to conquer all the kingdoms between the Euphrates and the Nile and to establish in their place one great Assyrian empire. All the conquered or imperiled kingdoms seethed with apprehension and revolt, forming alliances against the Assyrians and plotting political intrigues and rebellions. The kingdoms of Samaria and Judah were tottering on the brink of doom, not only because of the foreign menace, but primarily because of their spiritual and moral decay. As soon as Isaiah confessed his own sinfulness and unworthiness, one of the seraphim, at the command of the Lord, touched Isaiah’s mouth with a glowing stone (or burning coal), which he took from the altar, and pronounced that his iniquity was removed and his sin atoned. Years before Uzziah had entered the Temple of God in the pride of his heart and been stricken with leprosy (2 Chr 26:16-21). Your iniquity is taken away, and your sin purged: Isaiah’s sin had to be burned away; the fire of judgment was applied to his place of sin. This was obviously a spiritual transaction. Isaiah 6:10 No prophet has ever been called to a more heartbreaking and frustrating mission than Isaiah, a completely negative errand. To tell his people: to hear but not to understand to see without being able to perceive to make their hearts insensitive and unresponding to God's will. Isaiah is commanded to smear (or to paste), their eyes shut, lest they repent and be healed. He is to preach his people "callous, deaf and blind." Such a commission sounds extremely harsh and cruel. A deliberate and continued refusal to perceive what God is doing or to hear His voice must eventually result in blindness and deafness; A deliberate refusal to respond to the promptings of His Spirit must make one's heart hard and callous until the point is reached where there is no return and no cure. For a while the message of gloom continues without relief: Even if a tenth of the people should survive and come back from exile, that small survivorship will again be consumed, just as when the terebinth and the oak in the fall shed their leaves and are burned. Verse 13 is difficult to translate because the Hebrew words lend themselves to differing interpretations. The word "leaves" is not expressly in the Hebrew text, but seems to be implied. Others translate "like the terebinth and the oak whose stump remains standing when it is felled," (R.S.V.) . However the basic thought remains the same. Isaiah alludes to the doctrine of "the holy seed" in all of his oracles. "The holy seed" is not just the survivors who will come back from exile. Those who later returned from Babylon were not all faithful to the Lord; not all of them belonged to "the holy seed." Only those who truly repented and believed in the Lord and did His will were of "the holy seed." The Apostle Paul later called them: "a remnant according to the election of grace" (Rom. 11:5) . In this holy seed was vested the hope of Israel's redemption. Out of this "holy seed" was to come the Messiah Himself who would be the Redemption and the Redeemer of Israel.
