1 IB Psych 10/16/17 Nothing Intros only… Today’s Agenda: Working on SAQ
Turn in: Nothing Take out : Writing Implement NOTES Learning Outcomes Chart Your intros… Today’s Learning Objectives (not exclusive): All 13!!! I can write an effective introduction to an SAQ so my reader can quickly determine the topic of my writing. Today’s Agenda: Working on SAQ Intros only… HW: Find a study—RELATED TO BIO—either from the book or we’ve discussed. Write an intro as we’ve looked at in class (third time now…)

2 SAQ Structure “Suggestions”
Address the command term and prompt immediately. While not an essay, think of this as your introduction. Prompt: Describe one study of conformity. “In describing one study in relation to conformity, the following narrative will outline the details of the concept, using examples from [performed research].” Any thoughts as to what name we could give this “performed research”? WHY: at least two reasons…now I’m adding a third It demonstrated your understanding of the command term to your reader—who happen to be human, and can be immediately impressed with your knowledge of all things IB… It provides an anchor to YOU to help keep you on point throughout the response. You can name the research on which you’re writing!!! This does NOT relate to BIO!!! This is an EXAMPLE

3 Command Term Examples: Level 1—Knowledge/Comprehension
Define: Give the precise meaning of a word, concept, phrase. Say what it means in psychology and use precise vocabulary to do that. Describe: Give a detailed account Write a narrative that outlines the details of something using examples. Outline: Give a brief account or summary of something. Give a brief summary of whatever is mentioned in the question. State: Give a specific name or other brief answer without explanation. Give a very brief answer but don't explain anything.

4 Command Term Examples: Level 2—Application and Analysis
Analyze: Break down in order to bring out the essential elements Analyse means to consider existing evidence in relation to a specific problem; investigate possible explanations of a psychological problem. Apply: Use a theory or an idea to a given problem or issu Describe how a theory would explain a given psychological phenomenon or solve a problem. Distinguish: Make clear the differences between two or more concepts.. Indicate differences between two concepts or theories. Explain: Give a detailed account including reasons and causes. Give reasons and causes for a behaviour or psychological phenomenon.

5 Command Term Examples: Level 3— Synthesis and evaluation
Compare: Give an account of the similarities between two or more items or situations, referring to both (all) of them throughout. Focus only on similarities and refer to these throughout the response. Compare and Contrast: Give an account of similarities and differences between two (or more) items or situations, referring to both (all) of them throughout. Focus on both similarities and differences and refer to these throughout the response. Contrast: Give an account of the differences between two (or more) items or situations, referring to both (all) of them throughout. Focus only on differences and refer to these throughout the response. Discuss: Offer a considered and balanced review that includes a range or arguments, factors or hypotheses. Conclusions should be presented clearly and supported by appropriate evidence Address the question in a balanced way (not biased) where you consider available evidence and choose the most appropriate evidence to support your argument. Evaluate: Make an appraisal by weighing up the strengths and limitations of something Assess the value of something (e.g. a theory or a study) by looking into the evidence. Explain the strengths and limitations of the study or theory. Examine: Consider an argument or concept in a way that uncovers the assumptions and interrelationships of the issue. Carefully scrutinize an argument (or theory, concept, explanation) to see how it explains something and perhaps why. An examination could also include finding similarities and differences. To what extent: Consider the merits of otherwise of an argument or concept. Conclusions should be presented clearly and supported with appropriate evidence and sound argument. Assess the value of a theory or concept in explaining a psychological phenomenon (e.g. depression). The conclusion must be clear and supported by relevant evidence (i.e. empirical studies and evaluation of the theory) throughout the argument.

6 SAQ Structure “Suggestions”
Define any terms that warrant further demonstration of knowledge. i.e. Conformity Apply the defined word beyond the definition to demonstrate your understanding of the word in relation to a more general population. Put it in “layman’s” terms…

7 SAQ Structure “Suggestions”
Define any terms that warrant further demonstration of knowledge. Can we think of anything that might need to be defined here??? Meany, et al. Raine, et al. Bailey & Pillard Bouchard, et al. Sperry Apply the defined word beyond the definition to demonstrate your understanding of the word in relation to a more general population. Put it in “layman’s” terms…
