4 You will learn how to use sig figs in your calculations.

5 TI-84 Calculator

6 Significant Figures How to use your calculator

7 Why? Sig figs must be preserved in calculations.
In order to maintain Integrity. To show the tools’ precision.

8 Addition Rule When adding or subtracting use the least precise place value. 13.04 + 12.2 = 26.5 So, the 4 rounds up to a 5 least precise

9 Multiplication Rule When multiplying or dividing use the number of Fewest Digits. 15.165 x 5.0 ÷ 3.02 = 25 So, the 5 stays a 5 fewest digits

10

11 Addition 1.2m + 2.35m = 3.55m 3.6m So, round the 5 up to a 6
least place value Remember You can only add or subtract like terms

12 Multiplication 21.0 cm x 3.2 cm x 15.3 cm = 1.0 x 103 cm3 1000 cm3
So, round off here Change to scientific notation fewest sig figs Remember that 1 cubic centimeter is equal to 1 milliliter

13 Division fewest sig figs 3845.2m3 = m2 m2 m3-1 m So, round off here Remember to subtract the exponents
