1 Know the facts: Series III
4 Steps to Using Prescription Drugs Responsibly This document is confidential and is intended solely for the use and information of the party to whom it is addressed.

2 Step 1: Take Correctly Always follow your doctor’s orders and prescription instructions precisely Do not cut, crush, or break apart any pill unless your doctor says it is okay Medications can cause different reactions if consumed in ways other than prescribed, leading to potential health risks such as stroke If you have any questions about your prescription, contact your doctor

3 Step 2: Report Promptly Ensure that both Navy Medical and your command are aware of your current prescriptions If your prescription was written by a civilian doctor, you must report it so it can be entered into your military health records If your urinalysis sample tests "positive" for a prescription drug you have properly reported, you will not be subject to disciplinary action

4 Step 3: Dispose Properly
Place unused medication in a plastic bag with an undesirable substance (such as kitty litter or coffee grounds), pour water into the bag and throw away in the trash Cross out all personal information on the prescription drug label on the bottle Disposing of your prescription drugs as soon as you’re done is the best way to prevent others, and yourself, from abusing them Do not leave old prescription bottles out in the open where others can see them or be tempted to take them

5 Step 4: Never Share Never share your prescription medication with a friend, shipmate, or family member Even if a friend has similar symptoms to you, do not share your prescription medications. Your medicine was prescribed to you based on several factors that you and your friend might not have in common Never accept any prescription medication from a friend or family member, even if they are trying to help you

6 Series III: Review Take correctly by following your doctor’s orders and prescription instructions precisely Report promptly to ensure that both Navy Medical and your command are aware of your current prescriptions Dispose properly by placing unused medication in an undesirable substance (such as kitty litter or coffee grounds) and cross out all personal information before throwing in the trash Never share your prescription medication with a friend, shipmate, or family member
