Take out your journal, Green packet and carbon diagram map

2 Warm-Up 3/23 and 3/26 Thinking about yesterday’s station, there were two bottles that contain BTB and seltzer water Yellow = cold temp Blue = warm temp 1. Why is one blue and the other yellow? 2. What’s going on with the CO2? 3. What would you expect to hear from each bottle when you opened them?

3 Warm-Up Review Thinking about yesterday’s station #1, there were two bottles that contain BTB and seltzer water: Yellow = cold Blue = warm 1. Why is one blue and the other yellow? Cold bottle (yellow) had more dissolved CO₂ (aq) making it more acidic, Warm bottle (blue) had less dissolved CO₂ (aq) and more CO₂ (g) making it more alkaline—there was more in a gas form. 2. What’s going on with the CO₂ ? It leave the warmer water (less solubility) 3. What would you expect to hear from each bottle when you opened them? The cold bottle would have less gas escaping, you would hear a lot of fizz escaping the warm bottle.

We’ve examined part of the Carbon Cycle in the ocean- how about on land? Follow the directions to explore how solid Carbon is incorporated into soil!

9 Station 2 Carbon in the soil…
Soils are a significant source of carbon. In the soil there is a variety of carbon forms, however most matter is degrading (decomposition). This decay makes carbon more accessible through the process of soil leaching. Some carbon goes back into the atmosphere, some are nutrients, some gets mineralized.

CaCO₃ (calcium carbonate) CH₃COOH (acetic acid) H₂CO₃ (carbonic acid) Chemical weathering- breakdown of rock, by acid, into different molecules (happens in land and in ocean) Acid rain- rain containing acid components

12 Station 3 Acid Weathering of Rock
Carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. Mixed into rain as weak carbonic acid. The acid then breaks down the rocks into minerals and ions which then get washed into rivers, lakes and oceans
