International Altimetry: Transition Altitude vs Transition Level
Transition Altitude-when climbing out of an airport, the aircraft passes through a series of altitudes (not FL’s) until reaching an altitude at which a change from QNH (sea level setting) to QNE (standard altimeter) is made. This is called the transition altitude.
Transition Level-for arriving flights, the normal sequence is to descend on QNE until reaching a level, specified by ATC, at which point a change from QNE to QNH is made. This is called the transition level. 26
