12 Configure web and FTP servers
Use Windows and Linux tools to configure roles and install applications and services Configure web and FTP servers Understand how application and database servers are structured Understand the services provided by messaging servers What security precautions should you take when installing applications on a Linux server? Make sure that the repositories configured in the package manager are trustworthy. You can also verify file integrity using MD5 checksums. What does it mean if a server is stateless? The server does not store any information about a client or its requests. What is the name of Sun's multi-tier enterprise development platform? Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE). What two web server platforms are popularly used on Linux? Apache and nginx. What is throttling? Limiting the number of simultaneous connections allowed to a web or FTP server. What sort of information gets logged by a web server? All sorts! The main areas of interest are records of site traffic (numbers, regions, browser types, and so on), search engine requests (keywords that bring people to your site), and error records (such as broken links). A firewall filters applications based on their port number. If you want to configure a firewall to allow a PC to download messages from a server, which port(s) might you have to open? Either TCP port 110 or TCP port 143 depending on whether the mail access protocol in use was POP or IMAP. Note that port 25 (SMTP) is used to send mail between servers, not to access messages stored on a server. 3.1 Configuring Server Roles
