Semesters (Sept-Jan; Feb-June) Different subject teachers for each class Larger number of students in the school Greater student responsibilities Each course is credit bearing WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL?

4 DAY AT A GLANCE Students study four courses per semester
Classes are 75 minutes long Students have 5 minutes to travel from class to class The day starts at 8:30 and ends at 2:35 Lunch is from 11:10-12:00 DAY AT A GLANCE

5 GRADE 9 PROGRAM Each grade nine must take: 6 compulsory courses
2 elective courses GRADE 9 PROGRAM

11 PATHWAYS Workplace Apprenticeship University College
Direct entry to the workforce Trade skill set is learned directly from tradespeople Earn while you learn Preparation for entry into professional fields, higher education, and research Specialized knowledge in specific areas Real-world projects Direct connections to the world of work (placements) PATHWAYS

12 In grade 9, you must choose a stream for each course Applied (P), Academic (D), Locally Developed (L) for: English, math, science, French, geography All other courses are considered Open (O) STREAMS

13 Academic Applied Locally Developed Emphasis on THEORY. Emphasis on PRACTICAL APPLICATION. Courses cover material and skills necessary for daily activities. Works independently in a focused manner. May need assistance to organize and complete homework regularly. Completes homework consistently and thoroughly. Only English must be taken for university pathway. Some programs may require other subjects. Courses related to college/apprenticeship pathway Workplace pathway

14 Do I need to take all courses at the academic level if I’m going to university?
No, research your program. For example criminology programs don’t require math or science courses. Math and science can be taken at the applied stream to fulfil graduation requirements FAQs

15 Can I take academic courses in grade 10 if I took applied level in grade 9?
Yes, with the exception of math. You must take a transfer course (summer school) or take grade 9 academic math in semester 1 and grade 10 academic math in semester 2 in your grade 10 year. FAQs
