Presentation on theme: "PROBLEM SOLVING CHECKLIST"— Presentation transcript:

1 PROBLEM SOLVING CHECKLIST
|Read: List the information in the problem Identify key facts Identify and write the question asked There may be more than you need If data is missing, see if you can find it in a reference You may need to answer a hidden question to find it

2 Use units to give meaning to measurement
STUDENTS WILL: Determine what can be measured and how, using appropriate methods and formulas Use units to give meaning to measurement Understand that all measurement contain error and be able to determine its significance

3 STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY
STUDENTS WILL: Collect, organize, display, and analyze data Make predictions based on data analysis Understand and apply concepts of probability

4 PROBLEM SOLVING STUDENTS WILL:
Build new mathematical knowledge through problem solving Solve problems that exist in mathematics and other context Apply and adapt a variety of appropriate strategies to solve problems Monitor and reflect on the process of mathematical problem solving

5 REASONING AND PROOF STUDENTS WILL:
Recognize reasoning and proof as fundamental aspects of mathematics Make and investigate mathematical conjectures Develop and evaluate mathematical arguments and proofs Select and use various types of reasoning and methods of proof

6 COMMUNICATION STUDENTS WILL:
Organize and consolidate their mathematical thinking through communication Communicate their mathematical thinking coherently and clearly to peers, teachers, and others Analyze and evaluate the mathematical thinking and strategies of others Use the language of mathematics to express mathematical thinking precisely

7 CONNECTIONS STUDENTS WILL:
Recognize and use connections among mathematical ideas Understand how mathematical ideas interconnect and build on one another to produce a coherent whole Recognize and apply mathematics in context outside of mathematics

8 REPRESENTATION STIDENTS WILL:
Create and use representations to organize, record, and communicate mathematical ideas Select, apply, and translate among mathematical representations to solve problems Use representations to model and interpret, physical, social, and mathematical phenomena

9 Plan: How can you solve the problem
Choose a strategy or strategies to try You may need more than one: Act it out - Draw a picture Work backward - Find a pattern Solve a simpler -Make an organized Problem list Interpret data - Guess, Test & Revise Choose the operation - Use a model

10 Solve: How can you carry out your plan? Tell what you did, what tool you used, why, and how Look Back: Have you answered the question? Does your answer make sense?
