1 Habit #3 Put First Things First
Based on the work of Stephen Covey

2 I spend my time on things that are most important
I spend my time on things that are most important. This means I say no to things I should not do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan. I am organized.

3 Think about it… Sometimes not being brave gets in the way of doing things that are important to you. Putting first things first might means putting aside your fears to reach your goal. Has fear ever kept you from doing something great or important? Explain.

4 Big Things and Little Things:
Putting first things first means planning your time around the most important, BIG things in your life. Then, you can get to the little things that take your time. Big, Important Things That Take Your Time Small Things, Less Important Things That Take Your Time

5 Time Wasters: Brainstorm some things that you do that wastes a lot of your time. Sometimes these things are fun and relaxing. If you do them too much though, they may get in the way of the important things.

6 How could you be better at putting first things first?
Where do you fall? I always put first things first! I never to set goals or put first things first. How could you be better at putting first things first?

7 In General, we spend our time in four quadrants
In General, we spend our time in four quadrants. Each quadrant contains different kinds of activities and is represented by a type of person.

8 Quadrant 4: The Slacker Waste and excess.
These activities are neither urgent nor important. Results of living in Quadrant 4 are: 1. Lack of responsibility 2. Guilt 3. Flakiness

9 Quadrant 3: The Yes-Man Urgent but not important.
Activities that are important to other people but not important to you. Motto: “Tomorrow, I’m going to be more assertive-if that’s OK with you.” Qualities of a quadrant 3 person: 1. He has a real hard time saying no to anything or anyone. 2. He often caves in to peer pressure because he likes to be popular and he wouldn’t want to stand out. Results of spending too much time in Quadrant 3: 1. Reputation for being a “pleaser” 2. Lack of discipline 3. Feeling like a doormat for others to wipe their feet on

10 Quadrant 1: The Procrastinator
Both urgent and important Motto: “I’m going to stop procrastinating – sometime soon.” This person keeps putting things off until it becomes a crisis, but she likes doing everything at the last minute because it gives her a rush. The results of too much time in Quadrant 1 are: 1. Stress and anxiety 2. Burnout 3. Mediocre performance

11 Quadrant 2: The Prioritizer
Important but not urgent. It is the quadrant of excellence: the place to be! Takes a look at everything they have to do and then prioritizes, making sure the first things get done first and the last things last. The results of living in Quadrant 2: 1. Control of your life 2. Balance 3. High Performance

12 How do you spend your time?
In reality we all spend some time in each quadrant the key is to shift as much time as possible into Q2 and the only way you’ll find more time for Q2 is to reduce the amount of time you spend in the other quadrants. Here is how to do that: Shrink Q1 by procrastinating less. Say no to Q3 activities. Cut down on Q4 slacker activities.
