3 Aim and Scope of the Guidance (mandate CMA 2007-2009)
Support for MS for the transposition and implementation of Directive 2008/105/EC; follow-up of the CIS guidance n.19 on chemical water monitoring. The Directive gives possibility to MS to derive EQS for sediment and biota and obliges MS to perform trend analysis on sediment and biota (in line with WFD objectives). Need for harmonisation with the TGD on EQS derivation. Support for chemical monitoring in marine-coastal waters where sediment and biota are widely monitored compartments. (e.g. Marine conventions)

4 Drafting Process of the Guidance
: Draft 1 sent to CMA : Discussion in Gent : Draft 2 sent to CMA : Discussion in Rome 31/01/2010: End of Consultation with CMA (Draft 3) : Draft 4 sent to WG E 15-16/03/2010: Discussion Open Issues and Approval of the guidance at WG E 23 April 2010: Submission to the SCG

5 Collection and consultation of 300 CMA comments

6 Structure of the guidance
Chapter 1: Scope of the guidance Chapter 2: Terms and Definitions Chapter 3: Selection of parameters (Introduction, Selection of Compounds to be monitored in sediment or biota, Table with recommended matrix). Chapter 4: Sampling Strategy: general requirements (Statistical considerations, data analysis, QA/QC)

7 Structure of the Guidance Chapter 5 (sediment monitoring)
Para 5.1: Sampling strategy Para 5.2: Technical aspects of sampling Para 5.3: Analytical Methods Para 5.4: Normalisation co-factors

8 Structure of the Guidance Chapter 6 (biota monitoring)
Para 6.1: Introduction Para 6.2: Sampling Strategy Para 6.3: Technical Aspects of Biota sampling Para 6.4: Choice of Tissues for analysis Para 6.5: Analytical Methods Para 6.6: Preparation for data analysis Para 6.7: Environmental specimen bank

9 Structure of the guidance
Chapter 7: Complementary Methods (passive sampling in sediment and in biomonitoring; ecotoxìcologìcal tools) Chapter 8: Case Studies (France, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Finland) Chapter 9: References

10 Ch. 6 Open Issue - Use of Eel (anguilla anguilla) for biota monitoring
Some Member States commented that eel is an endangered species (e.g. UK, France, NL) and for this reason should not be part of WFD monitoring programmes.IUCN has included eel in the red list (critical endangered specie). On the other hand, other MS (Belgium) and OSPAR suggest that eel is a suitable indicator of a waterbody contamination and for monitoring purposes only few exemplars would be taken for analysis. Proposal: To be decide 10

11 Proposal for EEL Because of the protected status eel should only be used for trend monitoring (to continue old trend monitoring programs). 11

12 Invitation to SCG Approval of the final draft of the “Guidance on chemical monitoring of sediment and biota” in view of its endorsement by the Water Directors. Thank you for your attention!!!
