1 Order of Operations (B.I.D.M.A.S./B.O.D.M.A.S.)
-Learning XL Danish Imran

2 B.i.d.m.a.s Lets start with…

3 What does bidmas stand for?
B – Brackets = ( ) I – Indices = [ ] D – Division M – Multiplication A – Addition S – Subtraction This is the order of operation, meaning, we start by doing the brackets. Then the indices, then division and so on. But BODMAS is slightly different, and we will tell you about that after we finish this.

4 What do the questions look like?
The questions look like this: 3 x 4 + [ 17 + ( 12 – 9 ) ] x 7 – 6 As you can see all types of sums are included inside Eg: Brackets, Indices, Multiplication, Division, Subtraction and Addition As we follow the rule: BIDMAS, we call this: Order of Operations. Meaning – the order that we do of the operations is called BIDMAS.

5 How to follow this rule? First, we write the sum down: 3 x 4 + [ 17 + ( 12 – 9 ) ] 4 x 7 – 6 And we follow the rule by doing ‘Brackets’ first as it comes first in the list 3 x 4 + [ x Then we follow the rule and do ‘Indices’ 3 x 4 + [ ] 4 x 7 – 6 3 x x 7 – 6 After that, we now follow ‘Division’ 20 / 4 = 5

6 3 x x 7 – 6 Now, we finally come to multiplication. As you see, there are two sums of multiplication. So we will first start the sums from the right, like this: 3 x 4 = 12 5 x 7 = 35 Now we right down this sum: – 6 Now we do the addition. = 47 And the last sum – ( 47 – 6) 47 – 6 = 41 Therefore: 3 x 4 + [ 17 + ( 12 – 9 ) ] x 7 – 6 = 41

7 Bidmas and Bodmas Now, we will see what’s the difference between…

8 What’s the difference? In BIDMAS, we have indices.
B.O.D.M.A.S In BIDMAS, we have indices. Brackets are used ‘commonly’ in BIDMAS For higher standards (Grade 7/8) In BODMAS, we don’t have indices We hardly use brackets in BODMAS. For lower standards (Grade 5/6)

9 Lets go through a small quiz?
Ask an adult or a teacher to correct it, or Contact me on learningxl.weebly.com on the ‘Feedbacks and Contacts’ page with all your answers. The quiz is out of 5 marks, marks are given in [ ] at the end of each question. -No Calculators Allowed- Copyright of the Learning XL Website

10 Question paper (10 minutes maximum)
( / is division [ ] ) Question 1 5 x 6 – 7 + ( 8 x 7 ) [1] Question II 11 + ( ) / 5 x [2] Question III 41 – 6 / (3 + 4) x [2] Copyrights Reserved – Do not Distribute
