2 Getting Started This presentation will give you the necessary information in starting a real company. Of course, this is a simplified journey, but one you really can do to legitimize your business idea. Even if you have no products or a business location, you can still do these steps and establish your business right away. For class, all steps are optional, but can be helpful in impressing the judges.

Find the domain name through GoDaddy.com Go back to the county and register for the FBN Find a Newspaper and Publish the Name If needed, get a Sellers Permit from the State Obtain a business license from your city Get a EIN from the IRS. Open two business bank accounts

4 The County Website Go to your countys website to search for your name. For San Diego County try: http://arcc.co.san- diego.ca.us/arcc/services/fbn/search.aspxhttp://arcc.co.san- diego.ca.us/arcc/services/fbn/search.aspx Enter your future business name into the Business Name search field. A list of all names should come up. If you see it, you cannot use it. However, try to alter the name a little and you might be in luck.

Once, you find a name that has not been taken, do not register it! – The reason: people are watching for any new fictitious business names... – They will register the domain name for cheap, and hold it for ransom. Now that they own the domain name they can sell it to you for an overinflated price, knowing that is the domain name you want. A domain name is the web address customers would type in to reach your website, such as, www.mycompany.com.

8 Get Your Domain Name Go to a site that offers domain names for sale. www.godaddy.com and www.register.com are two popular ones. www.godaddy.com www.register.com Register.com is more expensive, but easier to use. 10 Go Back to the County and Register Now, if you were really going to start your business you would go back to the county website and register your business name. Of course, for class you do not have to buy a domain name or register it.

12 Find a Newspaper and Publish the Name Afterwards, you would have to make your business name public by publishing it in a newspaper. Hint: Choose the cheapest one. This is not a way to advertise your company, so you do not have to choose a newspaper with a large circulation.

Go to the following website to download the State of Californias Seller Permit. http://www.boe.ca.gov/pdf/boe400spa.pdf Hint: Print one out, fill it out and turn in with your business plan. Insert it into the Appendix.
