1 Skeletal, Muscular and Nervous Systems

2 Essential Question What does my skeletal, muscular and nervous system have to do with my overall health?

3 Warm Up – What do you already know?
How many Bones are in the human body? What does is the biggest and strongest bone? What nutrient helps with bone development and prevent skeletal disorders?

4 The Skeletal System Main Idea: The skeletal system consists of 206 bones and the attached connective tissues.

5 Skeletal System Functions
Providing Support for the body. Protecting internal tissues and organs from damage. Acting as a framework for attached muscles. Allowing movements of limbs and digits. Producing new red and white blood cells

6 Components/Types Bones are made up of living tissues formed into different layers. The outer layer is hard, densely packed, compact bone. Beneath that is spongy bone, with a network of cavities filed with red bone marrow, where blood cells are produced. Some bones also contain yellow bone marrow, a type of connective tissues that stores fat.

7 Components/Types Connective Tissue – consists of three types cartilage, ligaments, and tendons.

8 Components/Types Joints – points at which bones meets. Some joints, such as the ones between the bones of the skull, do not move. Flexible joints include ball-and-socket joints, hinge joints, pivot joints.

9 Caring for the Skeletal System
A healthy diet, exercise, protective gear, and regular checkups are ways to care for your skeletal system. Food high in calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorous help prevent skeletal disorders.

10 Understanding Skeletal Problems
Poor nutrition, infections, sport injuries, and poor posture can lead to problems of the skeletal systems. Degenerative disorders such osteoporosis can also cause problems.
