1 Parietal associational cortex
Domina Petric, MD Leonard E. White, PhD, Duke University

2 Account for 75% of the cerebral mantle in each hemisphere.
Association cortices Account for 75% of the cerebral mantle in each hemisphere. Leonard E. White, PhD, Duke University

3 Parietal associational cortex
Refers to posterior parietal lobe. Leonard E. White, PhD, Duke University

4 Posterior parietal cortex
Leonard E. White, PhD, Duke University

5 Functions of posterior parietal cortex
Attention: associational parietal cortex directs our attention to particular location in the outside world. DIRECTION OF ATTENTION! Leonard E. White, PhD, Duke University

6 Hemineglect syndrome Lesion of the posterior parietal cortex leeds to the contralateral hemineglect syndrome. Leonard E. White, PhD, Duke University

7 L R Hemineglect syndrome
Lesion to the posterior parietal cortex leeds to the contralateral hemineglect syndrome. In this picture: left hemineglect syndrome, lesion is in the right posterior parietal cortex. Leonard E. White, PhD, Duke University

8 Asymmetry of attention
There is asymmetry of attention in parietal associational cortex. For the left parietal cortex attention is focused across the midline to the right side of the visual world. For the right parietal cortex attention is distributed throughout the entire visual field. Leonard E. White, PhD, Duke University

9 Attention is focused to the right side of the visual world.
Attention is distributed throughout the entire visual world. Attention is focused to the right side of the visual world. Left posterior parietal cortex Right posterior parietal cortex Leonard E. White, PhD, Duke University

10 Asymmetry of attention
When attention is directed towards the left side of visual world, there is activation of right parietal cortex. When attention is directed towards the right side of visual world, there is bilateral parietal activation. Leonard E. White, PhD, Duke University

11 Left vs. right hemineglect
If the patient has the right posterior parietal lesion, there will be SEVERE LEFT HEMINEGLECT. If the patient has the left posterior parietal lesion, there will be MINIMAL RIGHT HEMINEGLECT. Leonard E. White, PhD, Duke University

12 Hemineglect syndrome In hemineglect syndrome, patient also neglects the contralateral part of the body. For example, patient with right lesion will neglect its left side of the body. Leonard E. White, PhD, Duke University

13 Posterior parietal cortex and body scheme
Parietal lobe is critical for building the body image, the neural construct of SELF. Leonard E. White, PhD, Duke University

14 Literature Leonard E. White, PhD, Duke University Leonard E. White, PhD, Duke University
