3 Imperial History of the Middle East
Uses embedded Shockwave Flash Object in PowerPoint ( The file “Imperial-History.swf” should be in the same directory as this PowerPoint presentation. Source: Maps of War, used with permission ( Rulers of the land of “Palestine”/Israel (in bold: independent Jewish state) Canaanite Period, Kingdom of Egypt, Hittite Empire 3300–1200 BCE Kingdom of Israel, 1200–539 BCE Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian Empire, 539–333 BCE Helenistic/Macedonian period, 333–165 BCE Maccabean/Hasmonean period, 165–63 BCE Roman Empire, 63 BCE–330 CE Byzantine Empire, 330–638 CE Arab Caliphate 638–1099 CE Crusader period 1099–1244 CE Mamluk period 1244–1517 CE Ottoman Empire 1517–1917 CE British Mandate 1917–1948 CE State of Israel 1948 CE–Present Speaker: The history didn’t start in 1948 with the declaration of Independence, or with the Balfour Declaration or 1986 with the modern Zionist movement, For over 3000 years, the land of Israel is the longest continuously inhabited piece of land in the world. (Start 90 second video now) As it plays talk about highlights: 1200 BCE the first Jews inhabited Israel for about 600 years. They were overthrown by the Romans. Again later in about 70 CE Jews again ruled the land for about 70 years, when they were all but destroyed. And finally after WWII, the British and French carved up the region creating what is Israel today. It is important to remember here that in all of the 300 years there was never a State called Palestine. Palestine was a region. A region with no governing body, no independent people and no laws. Similar to what we mean when we say we live in the western region of the United States. The concept of Palestine as a state did not exist before WWII.

4 Size of Israel Speaker: Ask the room How many people have been to Israel. You can even ask them what they think it looks like. This map shows the size of Israel. Basically it is the same size as Western Washington. It is only 260 miles long, 60 miles at its widest, and between 3 and 9 miles at its narrowest. 4

5 Israeli Sights Speaker notes: You’ll find ancient structures, attesting to Jewish civilizations from thousands of years ago (the Kotel or Western Wall, (You might want to describe what the Kotel is, and you might add in why people put pieces of paper in its cracks.) top left, and Masada, You might also describe what Masada is. middle row, second from the left) , and gleaming 21st Century high-tech high-rises (top row, middle picture). In Jerusalem, Israelis live in modern apartment buildings (upper right), and also in the restored ancient Jewish Quarter (bottom row, third from the left). They do their shopping at an open-air produce market (bottom right) or a snazzy mall (above it). The Mediterranean beaches (bottom left) attract locals and tourists in nice weather, which is most of the year; in Eilat, on the shore of the Red Sea, there’s an underwater observatory (leftmost, middle picture)—kind of like an aquarium, only the people are in the glass room and the fish are in their natural habitat—and some of the best scuba diving in the world. Haifa, a port city on the Mediterranean Sea, is home to a Baha’i temple (rightmost, second from top).

6 Israeli People Speaker Notes: Israel is not just diverse in its geography, it is also diverse in its population, a veritable melting pot. There are 7 and a half million Israelis of which 20% are Arab. They include native-born and immigrants, including many recent immigrants from Ethiopia and from the former Soviet Union. Here are some notable and some less notable Israelis—a super model and a soldier, a rabbi and a NASA astronaut, a student and a Nobel Prize winning scientist, an Armenian priest and an Arab Supreme Court Justice. Top row, from left: Orthodox Jew Bar Rafaeli, Israeli super-model, on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit edition, Leonardo DeCaprio’s ex-girlfriend ( Prof. Robert Aumann (pronounced awe-mun) of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, winner of the Nobel Prize in economics for 2005 ( 2005/index.html). Aumann is the fourth Israeli Nobel Prize winner in four years, joining Prof. Daniel Kahneman (Economics 2002) and Profs. Avram Hershko and Prof. Aaron Ciechanover (Chemistry 2004). Salim Joubran, Israeli Supreme Court justice ( Karnit Goldwasser, wife of Ehud Goldwasser, kidnapped and murdered in July 2006 by Hezbollah in a cross-border raid from Lebanon ( Second row, from left: Young woman Armenian (Greek Orthodox) priest Old man Etheopean woman Soldier Third row, from left: Ilan Ramon, Israel’s first astronaut, killed along with six American colleagues when the space shuttle Columbia broke apart on re-entry in 2003 ( Child Tal Checal, chairman, Ethiopian Student Union in Israel ( Jewish+Agency+In+The+News/2005/2005b/aug28ujc.htm+10.htm) Rana Raslan, 21, an Arab-Israeli from Haifa, Miss Israel 1999 ( Bottom row, from left: Female soldier Elias Inbram, Ethiopian-born Israeli diplomat, now on his first assignment to South Africa. Inbram was 8 years old when his family walked from Ethiopia to Sudan (where he saw a white person for the first time, and assumed the person had some sort of skin disease). When they later arrived in Israel, he saw many white people, and learned to accept that they were Jews like him, just with a different skin color…. Eitan Wertheimer, Chairman of the Board, ISCAR (Israeli metalworking company sold to Warren Buffet in April 2006 for $4B, Buffet’s first-ever investment outside the U.S. ( Old Bedouin man Ethiopian-born Belaynish Zevadia, was Israel's deputy consul general to the U.S. Southwest in Houston (

7 Founding Documents Speaker Notes: You can tell a lot about a society from its founding documents. The American Declaration of Independence, for example, says that “All men are created equal.” You hear words like, “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Or “In order to form a more perfect union.” Israel’s Declaration is also very lofty. We read here: The State of Israel is based on Freedom, Justice and Peace.” We see words like “complete equality of social and political rights” and that the state commits to “ freedom of religion, conscience, language education and culture.” This is definitely a country which was set up for its diverse people. Israel also extended a hand in an “offer of peace” to its neighbors, hoping “to establish bonds of cooperation,” like the US has with Mexico and Canada. Now let’s look at the Charter of Hamas, the Palestinian organization (and Iranian-backed terrorist group) that rules the Gaza Strip. [Animation: Second click shows the Hamas Charter] You won’t see here any words about rights or freedoms or extending hands of peace. On the contrary ,the Hamas charter says that “Israel will exist until Islam obliterates it” and that “There is no solution except through holy war,” and that all endeavors at peace are a waste of time. This is because Hamas believes that it can not exist in the ways of God (Allah) as long as Israel Exists. 8 “The Jews Are Jews” Speaker notes: This video is an example of the religious and political intolerance on Palestinian media. [Click on picture for video, JewsAreJews.wmv, 0’39”] A significant and dangerous message of the Palestinian Authority is that Jews are to be hated and killed because of an inherently evil nature. Jews are said to be the cursed enemy of Allah, and killing Jews has been repeatedly presented as a religious obligation. PA leaders preach that the battle with Israel is not merely over borders but to kill Jews - thereby bringing the Resurrection. The Hebrew Bible, the Talmud, and Jewish traditions are distorted, presented as having hateful and corrupt content. In this official, televised sermon, Dr. Ahmad Abu Halabiya, Rector of Advanced Studies at the Islamic University in Gaza and a member of the Sharia [Islamic law] Rulings Council, says that Jews "must be butchered and must be killed.” Source: Palestinian Media Watch,

9 15 Seconds to Take Cover And it isn’t just talk…. Hamas has been at war with Israel for years, lobbing rockets and mortar from Gaza into Israeli neighborhoods every single day. [Click on picture for video, 15seconds3.wmv, 2’06”]

10 Iranian President Ahmadinejad
Speaker notes: How should a sovereign state respond to repeated threats to annihilate it? Time and time again, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has stated that Israel should not exist. Moreover, he has done so with no significant domestic dissent. When the leader of a sovereign nation makes unequivocal statements without domestic opposition, those statements serve as the basis of national policy. It is critical to note that Ahmedinejad's statements go beyond opposition to Israeli policies, he is speaking of Israel's very existence. Ahmadinejad is also a very vocal Holocaust denier. He unequivocally states that the holocaust never happened. Today, hands down, Iran is Israel’s biggest threat today. That is because they are on the cusp of having fully working atomic weaponry. Rest assured the bomb is being developed to use against its enemies. Israel is at the top of that list, but just so you’re clear, so is the United States. Iran is dangerous to the entire world. 13 Co- Existence The “Seeds of Peace” summer camp ( is an innovative youth program set in the pristine woods of Maine. The 3 week conflict resolution program hosts nearly 350 Afghan, American, Egyptian, Indian, Israeli, Jordanian, Pakistani and Palestinian participants to the camp each year. It is designed to open young minds to the possibility of a new reality. Every aspect of the program fosters trust, challenges assumptions and narrows the psychological distance between the participants. The program’s intensity is deliberate. Each Seed shares a bunk with the very people they have been conditioned to hate. Athletic, artistic and cultural activities scheduled throughout the days deepen the bonds between Seeds. Daily dialogue sessions form the center of the program. During hours of discussion, conducted by professional facilitators, they are forced to confront their differences. By the end of the program each Seed has achieved a new threshold for tolerating ideas and understanding perspectives that were once beyond comprehension. Seeds of Peace also offers programs in the Middle East including a Conflict Management and Mediation Training Program, Hebrew and Arabic Language Courses, dialog groups, community service programs, a parent program, and an education program for Israeli and Palestinian kindergartens. For more, please see Peace Oil ( is a business venture that encourages co-operation between communities. The prize winning extra virgin olive oil is produced in Israel by Jews, Arabs, Druze and Bedouin working together. Grown in the foothills of the Carmel Mountains, the olives are pressed within hours of picking. They exhibited at our Jewish Community Festival two years ago (summer 2008). Jewish refugees: In 1945 there were 870,000 Jews living in the Arab world 700,000 from ancient Jewish communities were forced to seek refuge in Israel or elsewhere in the West Israel gave the refugees citizenship and full rights They were settled right away, integrated within a few years, and completely assimilated within a generation Arab refugees: In 1948 there were 830,000 Arabs living in what is now Israel 700,000 of them sought refuge in the Arab world They were denied citizenship and employment by the Arab states (except Jordan); forced to live in refugee camps in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Gaza and West Bank Children and grandchildren of 1948 refugees still counted as “refugees” by the UN Arab countries, Palestinian leadership, and international organizations continue to work hard to prevent resettlement and preserve “refugee” status, after 60 years and 3 generations.
