4 Making Bibliography Cards for Books
Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication. Note: Every comma and period must be there. Note: The book is in italics. Note: Indent five spaces if you go under the name.

5 Example Books Gleick, James. Chaos: Making a New Science. New York: Penguin, Print. Henley, Patricia. The Hummingbird House. Denver: MacMurray, Print. Note: The place is a CITY then a colon. If the city is not well known, the state abbreviation follows. Note: Sometimes a publishing company will have Inc., for incorporated. UP means University Press. Note: “Print” means you found a book or periodical that you can hold in your hand. It is NOT a computer source.

6 Books with More than One Author
Gillespie, Paula, and Neal Lerner. The Allyn and Bacon Guide to Peer Tutoring. Boston: Allyn, Print. Note: The first given name appears in last name, first name format; subsequent author names appear in first name last name format.

7 Books with FOUR or More Authors
Wysocki, Anne Frances, et al. Writing New Media: Theory and Applications for Expanding the Teaching of Composition. Logan, UT: Utah State UP, Print. If there are more than three authors, list only the first author followed by the phrase et al. (Latin for "and others") in place of the other authors' names. Note that there is a period after “al” in “et al.”

8 Article in Major Reference Book (e.g. Encyclopedias, Dictionaries)
Cite the piece as you would any other work in a collection but do not include the publisher information. Also, if the reference book is organized alphabetically, as most are, do not list the volume or the page number of the article or item. "Ideology." The American Dictionary of Art. 3rd ed Print.

9 A Work in an Anthology, Lesser Known Reference, or Collection (Pro-Con Books)
If you open this type of a book and every chapter is by a different person, you have an anthology, lesser known reference, or articles in a collection. They are all done the same way. Make sure you have the author of the chapter you want to use and the editor of the book.

10 A Work in an Anthology, Lesser Known Reference, or Collection (Pro-Con Books)
Last name, First name. "Title of Essay." Title of Collection. Ed. Editor's Name(s). Place of Publication: Publisher, Year. Page range of entry. Medium of Publication. Note: Ed. stands for editor. The editor name goes first name last name without a comma.

11 A Work in an Anthology, Lesser Known Reference, or Collection (Pro-Con Books)
Harris, Muriel. "Talk to Me: Engaging Reluctant Writers." A Tutor's Guide: Helping Writers One to One. Ed. Ben Rafoth. Portsmouth, NH: Heinemann, Print. Swanson, Gunnar. "Graphic Design Education as a Liberal Art: Design and Knowledge in the University and The 'Real World.'" The Education of a Graphic Designer. Ed. Steven Heller. New York: Allworth Press, * Print. * Technically, you do not need the page number in a lesser known encyclopedia if it is in alphabetical order.

12 A Work in an Anthology, Reference, or Collection (Pro-Con Books)
Are you using information from the introduction or forward of these books? If so, the EDITOR wrote them. His/her name would go on there twice: Harris, Muriel. “Forward.”A Tutor's Guide: Helping Writers One to One. Ed. Muriel Harris. Portsmouth, NH: Heinemann, Print.

13 Periodicals (magazines and newspapers)
These are for “hard copy” periodicals only that you can hold in your hand. Magazine: Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Periodical Day Month Year: pages. Medium of publication.

14 Periodicals (magazines and newspapers)
Magazine examples: Poniewozik, James. "TV Makes a Too-Close Call." Time 20 Nov. 2000: Print. Buchman, Dana. "A Special Education." Good Housekeeping Mar. 2006: Print. Note: All months are abbr. except May. Note: There is no period after the periodical.

15 Periodicals (magazines and newspapers)
Article in a Newspaper Cite a newspaper article as you would a magazine article, but note the different pagination in a newspaper. If there is more than one edition available for that date (as in an early and late edition of a newspaper), identify the edition following the date (e.g., 17 May 1987, late ed.). Brubaker, Bill. "New Health Center Targets County's Uninsured Patients." Washington Post 24 May 2007: LZ01. Print. Krugman, Andrew. "Fear of Eating." New York Times 21 May 2007 late ed.: A1. Print.

16 Online Databases: SIRS, Facts on File, Newsbank, Inspire
Important Note on the Use of URLs in MLA MLA no longer requires the use of URLs in MLA citations. Because Web addresses are not static (i.e. they change often) and because documents sometimes appear in multiple places on the Web (e.g. on multiple databases), MLA explains that most readers can find electronic sources via title or author searches in Internet Search Engines. Aristotle. Poetics. Trans. S. H. Butcher. The Internet Classics Archive. Web Atomic and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 13 Sept Web. 4 Nov ‹

17 Online Databases: SIRS, Facts on File, Newsbank, Inspire
Abbreviations Commonly Used with Electronic Sources MLA requires the use of special abbreviations to indicate that certain information is not available. Use n.p. to indicate that neither a publisher nor a sponsor name has been provided. Use n.d. when the Web page does not provide a publication date. When an entry requires that you provide a page but no pages are provided in the source (as in the case of an online-only scholarly journal or a work that appears in an online-only anthology), use the abbreviation n. pag.

18 Online Databases: SIRS, Facts on File, Newsbank, Inspire
Basic Style for Citations of Electronic Sources (Including Online Databases) Not every Web page will provide all of the following information but collect as much as you can: Author and/or editor names Article name in quotation marks Title of the Website, project, or book in italics Any version numbers available, including revisions, posting dates, volumes, or issue numbers. Publisher information, including the publisher name and publishing date. Take note of any page numbers (if available). Date you accessed the material.

19 Online Databases: SIRS, Facts on File, Newsbank, Inspire
OR……………..use the citation on the last page of your printout! Double check it for errors not adhering to the new MLA style rules.

20 Online Databases: SIRS, Facts on File, Newsbank, Inspire
Since most of these articles usually come from periodicals, be sure to consult the periodical directions. In addition to this information, provide the title of the database italicized, the medium of publication, and the date of the article and lastly, the date of your access. Last name, first name. “Article in Quotes.” Periodical in Italics Day Month year published: page numbers. Database in Italics. Web. Date you accessed.

21 Online Databases: SIRS, Facts on File, Newsbank, Inspire
