2. Building Background
Mary Rowlandson created a new genre of American Literature, the Captivity Narrative.
Was a Puritan-very religious, believed God was in control of everything.
Her captivity takes place during King Philip’s War

3. King Philip Was really Native American chief Metacom
His father had been Massasoit, one of the Native Americans that helped the first Colonists off of the Mayflower.
Native Americans were rebelling about so much of their land being taken over as more and more colonists arrived.
The execution of three of his tribesmen was the last straw, and led to an open war as they tried to overtake colonial towns.
