2 1. What are some of the Sectional differences between the North and the South?

3 North- wanted to keep everything in the US and improve internal things
North- wanted to keep everything in the US and improve internal things. They supported the Government changes for self-sufficiency South- was making more money off selling to the foreign lands and getting credit. They wanted to sell outside US. However, tariffs were getting higher and costing more.

4 Jackson and John Adams had a horrific presidency campaign
Jackson and John Adams had a horrific presidency campaign. Attacking one another on personal levels and going at each other families. In the end Jackson won the presidency and became known as the people’s president. Have we seen any thing like this in today's presidential elections.

5 2. What is the Tariff of Abominations?

6 A bill passed that raised the tariffs on goods significantly, this outraged the South. They had to sell cotton at low prices, yet pay high prices on tariffs.

8 Tariff- A tax on imported goods.

9 4. What is the doctrine of nullification?

10 Doctrine of Nullification
The states had the right to nullify or reject a federal law that is considered unconstitutional. This doctrine caused great debate in the US.

The two sides Daniel Webster- it gave the states rights and gave the people more of a say. It gave them a lawful way of protecting their freedom. (for it) Hayne- He said the government was already for the people and this would make each state different and cause problems with one another. (against it) 11

12 Problems of Jackson 5. What problems did Jackson have in office?

13 Jackson’s struggles Jackson struggled to please everyone. He had to lower the tariffs to make the South happy, but they still thought it to high. South Carolina threatened to succeed (withdraw from the union) and create their own army.

14 Jackson’s struggles Jackson also struggled with banks. He did not trust them controlling all of the governments money and he believed they hurt the average person. He vetoed a law to renew the bank and this made people upset. 14

18 Inflation- increase in prices and a decrease in money
Inflation- increase in prices and a decrease in money. Do we see this with anything today?

20 Panic of This was a widespread fear about the state of the economy. People took paper money to the banks and demanded gold because it was more valuable.

22 Depression- When the economy is in a severe economic slump.
Are we in a depression today?

23 Describe the Whig party.

24 The whig party was created because it opposed the power of the government.

25 William Henry Harrison
Elected Whig representative. Was war hero in Battle of Tippecanoe and the War of Their slogan was “Tippecanoe and Tyler too” named after him and John Tyler his vice president. Harrison was the first president to die in office. 25
