1 OXIDATIVE PHOSPHORYLATION IN MITOCHONDRIA
Lecture Prepared by: Dr. Laxmi Kant Pandey

2 What is Oxidative Phosphorylation?
The formation of ATP (Adenosine Tri Phosphate) from ADP (Adenosine Di Phosphate) and Pi (inorganic phosphate) by utilizing the free energy released from the oxidation of NADH/FADH2 . Its depends upon the generation of proton motive force across the inner mitochondrial membrane.

3 Chemical reaction

4 Structure of Mitochondria

5

6 Steps in oxiadative phosphorylation
Electron transport chain (ETC) Synthesis of ATP by ATP Synthase (F0F1 Complex)

7

8

9 Inhibitors of oxidative phosphorylation
Inhibitor of Electron Transport Chain Rotenone and Amytal : inhibits electron transport through complex I. Piericidin : is an antibiotic, blocks the transfer of electron at complex I. Antimycin A: also an antibiotic, blocks the transfer of electron at complex III.

10 4. Cyanide, Azide and Carbon Monooxide: They binds with complex IV and inhibit the terminal transfer of electrons to Oxygen. Inhibitor of F0F1 complex : Oligomycin Oligomycin is an antibiotic which completely blocks ATP synthesis by blocking the flow of protons through F0 of F0F1 complex
